I ran into the same problem with my XPS M1530 with 64 bit Ubuntu 9.04. Another way to resolve the crash without having to edit the configuration file manually is to install Skype and test your video from the options window. This keeps the camera busy so that you can open up the program and change the settings. I prevented it from crashing by changing the frame format to MPEG. I was then able to use resolutions 1600x1200, 800x600, 320x240, 160x120 and 640x480. I just tried your solution and sure enough it worked for me as well. So it seems that when the frame format is set to AUTO and the frame size is 1600x1200, it causes a segmentation fault in both of our computers which likely have the same camera in them.
I've just tried the latest version of wxCam on my Dell XPS M1330
running Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit, I got some problems when trying to
execute: I got a segmentation fault:
Determining video4linux API version...
Using video4linux 2 API
Determining pixel format...
pixel format: MJPEG
Found V4L2_PIX_FMT_MJPEG pixel format
pixel format: YUV 4:2:2 (YUYV)
Found V4L2_PIX_FMT_YUYV pixel format
Fallo de segmentación (segmentation fault, in Spanish :))
However, I could execute wxcam by hand editing the .wxcam preferences
file in my home directory, and setting resolution to 640x480, after
this, I can execute wxcam without problems.
Some other comments:
- 320x240 resolution works too.
- frame size options in wxcam don't show correct resolutions for my
webcam, some don't work (50x37, 100x75, 200x150) and the other cause
the segmentation fault (400x300, 800x600). 640x480 (native) and
320x240 don't appear in the options list.
- in case it helps, when running cheese I get this message:
libv4l2: error converting / decoding frame data: v4l-convert: error
parsing JPEG header: Not a JPG file ?
Hope this helps people run wxcam and the developers to track the problem.
