Right. So basically, you are on your own here. I'm guessing there's enough bit rot here that it's going to be a significant amount of work to just get this compiling again, let alone actually working. -Dave > On Jun 3, 2015, at 5:01 PM, Keith T. I've been trying to use Wx with Java on the Mac (after great success with Python). My programs compile but won't run with a message complaining that the library, Libwx4j.jnilib, is mach-o but wrong architecture. I have found no postings addressing this or how to rebuild that library. Did I miss the answer somewhere? Thanks |

(I presume you're referring to wxjava.sf.net, formerly on steveperkins.net) wxJava predates wx4j, but wx4j was written with SWIG instead of generating all the java/C++ bridge code by hand. This makes it much easier to update to new versions of the wxWidgets library and generate bindings for the full class library. Unfortunately, the original project the wx4j team was working on was shelved, so it's not maintained. It hasn't been tested with wxWidgets 2.6 at all, and we still don't have 100% completion on the classes. Regarding wxJava, you'll have to take that up with the maintainer. That's another project and we're not affiliated in any way. From my vantage point it doesn't appear that wxJava has moved since before wx4j was created, so it looks like your options aren't good. |

Hello, Lately i've been wanting to create a simple text editor applet in Java (because i dont like inserting [B], [I], ect into an html <textarea>), and rather than to learn Swing, i figured id'e stick to something im already used to, like wx. It's more a matter of time than money. As the other Dave mentioned, we were being paid to work on it, and that project got cancelled. I just do not have the time outside of working hours to spend on wx4j. If someone is willing to pay me enough so I could work on wx4j *as* my day job, please send me a private email. -Dave |

In answer to your first question, Dave and I were working on it for a specific project, which was cancelled. With the latest version of swig, it should be fairly simple to implement most of the simple classes with wx4j and the ones that need callbacks such as wxValidator with swig director classes. The only other complications I can recall offhand were that virtual list controls were too slow because of JNI performance, and you'd have to retool it a little bit to fit wxWidgets 2.6. |

Hi Dave, I'm just wondering, why did you decide to give up on the project? Java is a lovely language but suffers from a really bad set of UI tools - that's where WX looked very promising. If it was a question of funding I'm sure most semi-serious programmers would be happy to pay for an up-to-date release. I have no idea what you're trying to do, and thus won't even attempt to suggest a language. IF you find that C/C++ is the best language for your project AND you need a GUI THEN wxWidgets is probably your best choice. The C++ library has the advantage of being maintained, wx4j is basically on hiatus with no real promise of ever being worked on again. If C++ is too hard, there's always wxPython, which was my first intro to wx in the first place. (Note: I'd like to work on wx4j again, and could probably be convinced to do so on a contract basis if anybody's interested in that.)
