wvVersion is returning the error message "<file-id>
couldn't be opened as any known word document". The
files are Word 6.0/95 files. I assume because
wvVersion can not identify the file wvText will not
    convert the file.

I am running on Redhat 6.2 on an Intel Pentium 100
    system.

Sample .doc files can be supplied via EMail upon
    request.

I encountered the same problem with documents I exported from word-97 in word-95(word 6) format. I looked at the document with an editor and it is clearly an RTF document, not a binary word-format document. I suspect this is a word97-ism: When you save files in word95 (word 6) format, it simply saves them in RTF format instead.

I found that word97 saves word95-format (i.e. word6) docs as RTF files, not binary word files. Try editing the ".doc" file you are having problems with a text editor. I'll bet dollars to doughnuts it is an RTF file. Thus the problem.

wvVersion failing on RTF files isn't exactly a bug.
