The problem is that MSFT stores strings in a variety of codepages inside of
MS-Word. We need good ways to convert those to codepages suitable for
storing inside of HTML, LaTeX, and friends.
Everyone uses iconv nowadays because there are about a billion different
languages on the planet, each with their own codepages and character sets
(some of which grow into the millions of characters). People need a too like
iconv in order to meaningfully exchange data and store it on disk.
If you can think of a better way to do this, please let me know :) I hate
iconv more than the next guy, but in this case, it's entirely Sun's fault.
