I don't have one of these radios but this has me wondering now. Is this a bug or a feature? Why would Icom do this? Self powered USB devices are part of the USB spec. There does not necessarily need to be a power connection from the host. Maybe some enterprising soul could void his warranty and see if the rig can be modified for self powered USB.
