Hi, I am using wrapper-windows-x86-32-3.2.3 to start jboss 4.0.5 GA and while Jboss starts correctly after I increased the timeout, the wrapper service does not realize Jboss has started and get stuck with the starting state and eventually times out. I also tried WrapperStartStopApp which has the same problem. I have not tried using WrapperListener yet. Hi, Boot your machine without logging in. Try to connect to the machine from another computer, using a connection to the machine with administrator rights. Start the Servicemanager on the other computer from the control panel and connect to the machine with the services (right click on services -> connect to other computer). Try to start the services. If it works now, you might have a dependencies problem. What services do you depend on? I think its a good Idea to make your services dependent on the "Workstation" and the "Server" services. >From the config files I suppose your services run with "localSystem" account. Be aware and make sure that your services don't use anything that requieres the redirector (mapped drives or UNC names). You might also have to define a dependency between your 'server' and 'connector' services. hth hub >>> Olivier Houyoux <oho...@ne...> 01.02.2007 11:02 >>> Hi, I installed two Windows services (names 'server' and 'connector') with the wrapper. They work perfectly when a user's session is opened or even when a user logs off. Unfortunately theses services don't start when the machine is simply started without any user's session. Is it possible to have this behavior and how should I configure the wrapper to do so? You'll find attached the app. configs and logs of multiple start/stop tries. Thanks for the help, Olivier |

Hi Leif,
I could success fully complete the build. However I found some warning
messages. Please look at them and see if every thing is fine.
Let me know what to do next.I mean should i upload the binaries to some
where? If you need me to do the testing before i do any thing it might
take some more time for me.
Also let me know what to do to build 64 bit version of it (i have 64 bit
HP UX. Do i need 64 bit jdk too..??)
Here are the messages from the build...

Leif, < Not currently Yes, I supposed so. Just a tought: Could one use the anchor files for that? The names of the anchor files would have to follow some rules, to be able to find them from a service name. On startup, wrapper could figure out the dependencies and the belonging anchor files. If one or more of them is deleted or changes date (restart), that would mean either a shutdown or a restart of a dependent service. Wrapper could inform the service about this issue an let the service decide to either shutdown too or request a restart. Or maybe just define a list of anchor files the wrapper should watch for changes? just my two cents. Regards Hubert >>> Leif Mortenson <le...@ta...> 30.01.2007 19:45 >>> Hubert, Not currently. This is something that I need to find a way to get implemented. From within Java, you can control the services if you know what they are. Look at the WrapperManager.getJVMId() method. If it returns a value > 1 then you know the JVM has been restarted since the Wrapper was launched. In that event, you can use the WrapperManger.sendServiceControlCode method to STOP and then START the dependent services. This will only work if you know what they are. Hey Leif,
...and if you think you know them all, there is still one more feature
:-)
I' ll play with it, thank you very much
Regards
Hubert
>>> Leif Mortenson <le...@ta...> 30.01.2007 19:41 >>>
Hubert,
The Wrapper doesn't do anything itself but the JVM has support for
this.
Take a look at the java.lang.Runtime class. You will find the
freeMemory(),
maxMemory(), and totalMemory() methods. totalMemory() is the amount
of allocated memory. To find out how much is actually being used, do
this
inUseMemory = rt.totalMemory() - rt.freeMemory();
Note that those two calls are NOT synchronized. If a memory
allocation
is made at the right moment, it may be possible to get strange values
for inUseMemory...
On Windows, the following two properties exist on an experimental
basis
They are not supported and I reserve the right to change them in the
future,
but you might want to try playing around with them. If I can figure
out a
way to do the same thing on UNIX platforms, there are some things I
would like to do with this data. Logging it is not all that
interesting.
wrapper.memory_output=TRUE
wrapper.memory_output.interval=60
Here are the meanings of the output:
log_printf(WRAPPER_SOURCE_WRAPPER, LEVEL_STATUS,
"Wrapper memory: %lu, %lu (%lu), %lu (%lu), %lu (%lu), %lu
(%lu) Java memory: %lu, %lu (%lu), %lu (%lu), %lu (%lu), %lu (%lu)",
wCounters.PageFaultCount,
wCounters.WorkingSetSize, wCounters.PeakWorkingSetSize,
wCounters.QuotaPagedPoolUsage,
wCounters.QuotaPeakPagedPoolUsage,
wCounters.QuotaNonPagedPoolUsage,
wCounters.QuotaPeakNonPagedPoolUsage,
wCounters.PagefileUsage, wCounters.PeakPagefileUsage,
jCounters.PageFaultCount,
jCounters.WorkingSetSize, jCounters.PeakWorkingSetSize,
jCounters.QuotaPagedPoolUsage,
jCounters.QuotaPeakPagedPoolUsage,
jCounters.QuotaNonPagedPoolUsage,
jCounters.QuotaPeakNonPagedPoolUsage,
jCounters.PagefileUsage, jCounters.PeakPagefileUsage);
Cheers,
Leif

Leif, <What version of the wrapper are you using? 3.2.4, trunk version <Starting with 3.2.1, the Wrapper will automatically disable timeouts if it is able to detect from the <java command line that a debugger is being use. < or the "-Xdebug" parameter is passed to the JVM Sorry, I missed these release notes for 3.2.1 <Are you encountering problems? Leif,
<This is described in the documentation for that property.
I thought that I have red everything, must have overlooked this.
< Developers may be killing the wrapper as you say. But that is

< and should be handled with a good firm SMAK! :-)
Good idea, but I will get sore muscles and called "the smacker" then
:-), maybe I should start doing this preventive.
Old habits die hard, but if people learn that wrapper takes over and
does everything
for them, they probabely will accept it.
< If you have a dedicated JRE installation
We have, and if somebody really want's it that way I do the copy.
< Note that you can also get the PIDs of the wrapper and java
<processes
Thank you for the hints
Regards
Hubert
>>> Leif Mortenson <le...@ta...> 30.01.2007 19:18 >>>
Hubert,
True. But in order to get the JVM to exit immediately, you would
have to set
the ping timeout to a low value. Doing that would cause you other
problems as
the wrapper could start restarting the JVM under high loads. This is
described in
the documentation for that property.
Developers may be killing the wrapper as you say. But that is
abnormal behavior
and should be handled with a good firm SMAK! :-) The Wrapper is
optimized to
handle normal operation and recover cleanly where possible when
something goes
wrong. It will recover and clean itself up if a pesky user does what
you did.
As for the process names. You are correct. For security reasons,
windows does
not provide a way to rename the process in the task manager. It will
always be the
name of the executable. To work around this on systems with multiple
JVMs and
Wrappers, I have created myapp-wrapper.exe and myapp-java.exe
executables by
copying the originals. The java.exe copy goes in the JAVA_HOME/bin
directory
along with the original. It is not very clean but does what you
want. If you have
a dedicated JRE installation that exists under the application's
directory structure
then the copied java.exe is a little less strange.
Note that you can also get the PIDs of the wrapper and java
processes with the
following properties. This will cause them to be written to the
specified files. You
can then compare those PIDs with those in the Task Manager. (Note you
need to
configure the Task Manager to show PIDs)

Rather it has been specifically designed to ensure that all distributions make use of and deploy with the exact same jar file. I will talk to my admin and see if he can install that for me. when i ran ./build64.sh, it is failing with The "bits" system property does not match that of the JVM. I am using jdk1.5.0_03 please let me know what to do.. thanks, krishna Leif Mortenson wrote: > Krishna, > For starters, download the latest "prerelease" distribution in tar.gz > format. Krishna, For starters, download the latest "prerelease" distribution in tar.gz format. Expand that into a directory on your HP-UX system. If everything is set up correctly and we are lucky then all you should have to do is run: ./build32.sh or ./build64.sh A release distribution will be output to the dist directory. If you get any errors, please post back with the results. Thanks if advance for your help. Cheers, Leif krishna wrote: > Hi, > i have hp ux system at my work. may be i can help you guys. but i am > not that great unix user. can u please point me to instructions on how > to build on hp > thanks, > krishna > Leif Mortenson wrote: >> Santo, >> The delta pack is a distribution which contains all of the binaries for >> the platforms >> that I have access to. Hubert, Not currently. Cheers, Leif Hubert Felber wrote: > Hello, > > If the wrapper has to restart a service, is there a way to inform the > dependent services about this? Hubert,
The Wrapper doesn't do anything itself but the JVM has support for this.
Take a look at the java.lang.Runtime class. You will find the freeMemory(),
maxMemory(), and totalMemory() methods. totalMemory() is the amount
of allocated memory. To find out how much is actually being used, do this
inUseMemory = rt.totalMemory() - rt.freeMemory();
Note that those two calls are NOT synchronized. If a memory allocation
is made at the right moment, it may be possible to get strange values
for inUseMemory...
On Windows, the following two properties exist on an experimental basis
They are not supported and I reserve the right to change them in the future,
but you might want to try playing around with them. If I can figure out a
way to do the same thing on UNIX platforms, there are some things I
would like to do with this data. Logging it is not all that interesting.
wrapper.memory_output=TRUE
wrapper.memory_output.interval=60
Here are the meanings of the output:
log_printf(WRAPPER_SOURCE_WRAPPER, LEVEL_STATUS,
"Wrapper memory: %lu, %lu (%lu), %lu (%lu), %lu (%lu), %lu
(%lu) Java memory: %lu, %lu (%lu), %lu (%lu), %lu (%lu), %lu (%lu)",
wCounters.PageFaultCount,
wCounters.WorkingSetSize, wCounters.PeakWorkingSetSize,
wCounters.QuotaPagedPoolUsage,
wCounters.QuotaPeakPagedPoolUsage,
wCounters.QuotaNonPagedPoolUsage,
wCounters.QuotaPeakNonPagedPoolUsage,
wCounters.PagefileUsage, wCounters.PeakPagefileUsage,
jCounters.PageFaultCount,
jCounters.WorkingSetSize, jCounters.PeakWorkingSetSize,
jCounters.QuotaPagedPoolUsage,
jCounters.QuotaPeakPagedPoolUsage,
jCounters.QuotaNonPagedPoolUsage,
jCounters.QuotaPeakNonPagedPoolUsage,
jCounters.PagefileUsage, jCounters.PeakPagefileUsage);
Cheers,
Leif

Hubert, What version of the wrapper are you using? Starting with 3.2.1, the Wrapper will automatically disable timeouts if it is able to detect from the java command line that a debugger is being use. From the 3.2.1 release notes: * Add support for debuggers. The Wrapper will now show a warning on startup and then again the first time a timeout occurs. But all timeouts will be ignored. This is to avoid problems with the Wrapper restarting a suspended JVM in the middle of a debugging session. The wrapper enters this mode if the wrapper.java.command ends with the string "jdb" or "jdb.exe", or the "-Xdebug" parameter is passed to the JVM. I actually never use the debugger personally, so I am not a good test case for this usage. Are you encountering problems? I may need to make additional changes to make this work smoothly for you. In general when using a debugger when paused, the JVM process will appear to be frozen from the perspective of the Wrapper. To keep it from killing that "frozen" JVM, it is necessary to extend or disable the following timeouts. If you will only be pausing the JVM while its application is up and running, then the ping and cpu timeouts will suffice. http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.org/doc/english/prop-startup-timeout.html http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.org/doc/english/prop-ping-timeout.html http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.org/doc/english/prop-cpu-timeout.html http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.org/doc/english/prop-shutdown-timeout.html http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.org/doc/english/prop-jvm-exit-timeout.html Be aware that changing these timeouts for a live system will severely degrade and or disable the Wrapper's ability to respond to a misbehaving JVM. Santo, The delta pack is a distribution which contains all of the binaries for the platforms that I have access to. Unfortunately this is not going to help you with HP-UX. I used to have a user who helped me out with releases, but he has unfortunately not been able to continue volunteering his time since the 3.2.0 release. I wish I could be of more help here, but I don't have access to any hardware. Maybe another HP-UX user will be able to help out.
