Nathan, Those memory properties have been around since the first versions of the Wrapper. They do nothing other than add the -Xmx and -Xms arguments to the JVM when it is launched. If you comment them out you can safely define them yourself. If they are both there however then you will get the memory arguments twice. If you want to verify the generated command line, do one of the following: wrapper.debug=true wrapper.java.command.loglevel=INFO Cheers, Leif Nathan Wray wrote: > > Hi Markus; > > Reading the documentation for the initmemory / maxmemory properties > says that they're optional, that they can be commented out and the > user can use the -Xmx/-Xms flags in the "additional" properties. > > What are the implications or side effects of not using initmemory / > maxmemory, and instead setting the memory values manually? HI I only used the init-/maxmemory options, and never tested the other ones. Maybe they even work, but sergio did not comment them out in his wrapper.conf? Thx for all your answers. I did it with the distinct properties instead of the java.additionals and it worked just fine. Leif I'm using the version 0.9.3 of the OpenAS2. I downloaded from sourceforge website but it was 1 year ago. (http://sourceforge.net/projects/openas2/) Thank you for you help. Rodolfo, You sent me the binary class file, not the source java file. Also this is really outside the scope of "wrapper" support. But to be able to help, I would most likely need more than just the single source file. Where are you downloading the jar you are using from? What is its version? Hi, I want to run JBoss as a Windows Service to avoid problems with starting the server from CruiseControl. I use the JavaServiceWrapper and wrote a wrapper.conf file with all necessary parameters to run JBoss suited for my test system. When I start JBoss with the batch script we used before, everything works just fine. When I start it with the wrapper the startup is much slower until it stops executing, throwing a heap space exception. This is how I define the memory allocation in the batch script: set JAVA_OPTS=%JAVA_OPTS% -Xms128m -Xmx512m I get exactly the same problems and exception starting JBoss when I comment this allocation, so I guess for some reason the JavaServiceWrapper can't get the memory allocation right. This is how I define it in wrapper.conf: rem JVM memory allocation pool parameters. Modify as appropriate. wrapper.java.additional.6=-Xms128m wrapper.java.additional.7=-Xmx512m Does any of you have an idea? What am I missing? Any help is highly appreciated... -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/Wrapping-JBoss%3A-Problems-with-memory-definition-tp14952013p14952013.html Sent from the Java Service Wrapper mailing list archive at Nabble.com. |

Rodolfo, Do you have the source for the org.openas2.app.StreamCommandProcessor class? I assume this is the source of that project: http://www.openas2.org/ I took a quick look at their CVS repository, but don't see that class. http://openas2.cvs.sourceforge.net/openas2/ The source distribution for the particular version you are using might be useful. Im currently using JSW to start Hudson (a continuous integration
server) as a debian daemon. In order to not let build scripts do
anything, Ive enabled the RUN_AS_USER param in the "init.d" script.
This has worked as expected, files are created by the right user,
process runs by the expected use, whoami outputs the right user.
But yesterday when I tried to run "vncserver" in one build (to test
NUnit GUI), I noticed that it was trying to write to the root's home
path.
/usr/bin/vncserver :10 -depth 16
vncserver: Wrong type or access mode of /root/.vnc.
A little investigation showed that the env variable HOME is still
"/root", and not the path to the user's home. This must come from the
fact that the JSW init.d script executes "su -m $RUN_AS_USER -c
"\"$REALPATH\" $2"". The "-m" preserves the enviroment, which contains
the old HOME variable ("/root").
Is there a reason that JSW uses the "-m" parameter? Or should the
init.d script be extended so it sets the HOME variable to the correct
home path?
Any ideas on how to solve this?
regards
//Erik

Luc,
Ok. Yes. When I was doing work on the Wrapper's native library,
I noticed that. For some reason output to stdout and stderr is not
flushed automatically from the native library. I assume that java is
doing something to its own process to give itself more control over
that output for performance reasons.
I had to do the following to get it to be logged immediately:
printf("Test Message\n"); fflush(NULL);
This doesn't have anything to do with the Wrapper. You should see
the same thing without the Wrapper.
Cheers,
Leif

Rodolfo, From your log file, the Wrapper is launching your Java application correctly. But the application is throwing an error as it starts up: --- INFO | jvm 1 | 2007/12/19 18:24:10 | 12/19/07 18:24:10 - OpenAS2 Started - INFO | jvm 1 | 2007/12/19 18:24:10 | org.openas2.WrappedException: java.io.IOException: The handle is invalid INFO | jvm 1 | 2007/12/19 18:24:10 | at org.openas2.app.StreamCommandProcessor.processCommand (StreamCommandProcessor.java:81) INFO | jvm 1 | 2007/12/19 18:24:10 | at org.openas2.app.OpenAS2Server.start(OpenAS2Server.java :60) --- Without knowing more about what is happening there, it is difficult to help. Common problems when running as a service are with accessing network resources. You need to specify an account to run as to get that working. Do know what that failed handle is? Hi, I'm configuring Java Service Wrapper to run Open AS2 as service on Windows 2003 Server. I did all needed configuration on file wrapper.conf. Running in the console, the program is working fine (running the wrapper bat file) . I installed service by running the install bat. Until here all is fine. But when a I try to run the service, the service don't start. The following is the Debug reported: STATUS | wrapper | 2007/12/19 18:24:08 | --> Wrapper Started as Service DEBUG | wrapper | 2007/12/19 18:24:08 | Using tick timer. Luc, What platform and version are you using? Are you seeing anything at all in the log or is only output from the JVM that is being delayed? I am not aware of any problems like this in the past. Hi, I have set the wrapper to log JVM input into a file and wrapper.console.flush=true to have "sysout" lines written synchronously in the log but the JVM output only appears after stopping the service. The stuff that are logged using logging are correctly written in 'real-time'. See my configuration: #******************************************************************** # Wrapper Logging Properties #******************************************************************** # Format of output for the console. (See docs for formats) wrapper.console.format=PM wrapper.console.flush=true # Log Level for console output. (See docs for log levels) wrapper.console.loglevel=INFO # Log file to use for wrapper output logging. wrapper.logfile=../logs/wrapper.log # Format of output for the log file. (See docs for formats) wrapper.logfile.format=LPTM # Log Level for log file output. (See docs for log levels) wrapper.logfile.loglevel=INFO # Maximum size that the log file will be allowed to grow to before # the log is rolled. Size is specified in bytes. The default value # of 0, disables log rolling. May abbreviate with the 'k' (kb) or # 'm' (mb) suffix. For example: 10m = 10 megabytes. wrapper.logfile.maxsize=0 # Maximum number of rolled log files which will be allowed before old # files are deleted. The default value of 0 implies no limit. wrapper.logfile.maxfiles=0 # Log Level for sys/event log output. (See docs for log levels) wrapper.syslog.loglevel=NONE Any Idea ? Thanks, Luc |

Most likely you compiled the classes in your application jar file
with a JVM newer than the JVM you are attempting to run as.
The JVM is being launched correctly but your main class is failing
to be loaded because of a bytecode verification error.

Try to type 'service myservice start' instead of '/etc/init.d/myservice start'. Second thing, environements variables are different during the init process. Hope that helps, Regards Nicolas |

Hareesh, Have you looked in your wrapper.log file? The most common problems with starting services on system startup are environment related. The Linux OS runs the startup and shutdown scripts in minimal environments which do not have environment variables set. The easiest thing to do is add a property like this to your wrapper.conf: set.JAVA_HOME=/opt/java/jrexxx OR set.default.JAVA_HOME=/opt/java/jrexxx The later will only set the JAVA_HOME variable if it is not already set. You should actually use that with care as it could result in different JVMs being used on startup vs being run from the user shell. I'm not sure how imminent a release of 64-bit wrappers is (any clues?) so I'm wondering about the state of the code in the repository. If we pull the latest and build it, are there any showstoppers to be aware of? We're mainly interested in Windows and Linux releases. Thanks, Cory |

Marcelo, did you finally succeed in getting the wrapper to work on Solaris
x64? I've gotten it to compile, but it won't load the native library:
WARNING - Unable to load the Wrapper's native library 'libwrapper.so '.
The file is located on the path at the following location but
could not be loaded:
/export/home/sdhays/Desktop/tmp/wrapper_3.2.3_src-64/bin/../lib/libwrapper.so
Please verify that the file is readable by the current user
and that the file has not been corrupted in any way.
One common cause of this problem is running a 32-bit version
of the Wrapper with a 64-bit version of Java, or vica versa.
This is a 64-bit JVM.
Reported cause:
/export/home/sdhays/Desktop/tmp/wrapper_3.2.3_src-64/lib/libwrapper.so:
ld.so.1: java: fatal: relocation error: R_AMD64_PC32: file
/export/home/sdhays/Desktop/tmp/wrapper_3.2.3_src-64/lib/libwrapper.so:
symbol main: value 0x280023eff84 does not fit
System signals will not be handled correctly.
I haven't figured out how to fix this; most of the things I find concerning
this error on the internet use the Sun Studio compiler, which I have also
tried and get the same result, even after specifying -KPIC (the most common
suggestion) and -xarch=amd64 -xmodel=medium.
Any suggestions?
Scott
