Dean, The PID file should be getting written by the shell script that ships with the Wrapper. Could you please confirm that you are using our script? Most likely you are. 1) When you first start out, please confirm that no pid file, wrapper process, or java process are running. 2) run the script with the "console" command. This should launch the Wrapper, and Java. 3) There should now be a PID file containing the Wrapper's PID. Please confirm the id in the PID file, and also print out a "ps -faux". 4) Does the PID in the file match that of the Wrapper? If not, please send me your shell script and wrapper.conf file as attachments. Also please send me the name of your OS and version. I should be able to find the problem from that. > Also, the 4017 command above seems odd > to me as it passes in all 7 arguments but the WrapperStartStopApp is > supposed to only pass in the 2 start args and the 3 stop args I would think > into the tomcat bootstrap process? This is actually working correctly. The Wrapper is actually launching the WrapperStartStopApp class, not the Bootstrap class. The WrapperStartStopApp class is responsible for running the startup and stop classes with their parameters at the appropriate times. This looks like you have set it up correctly: org.tanukisoftware.wrapper.WrapperStartStopApp org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap 1 start org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap TRUE 1 stop Cheers, Leif On Thu, Oct 29, 2009 at 11:43 PM, Dean Hiller <de...@xs...> wrote: > I am starting to play with JSW for tomcat 3.3.7, 64 bit for fun. when I run > ./tomcat start (tomcat was the wrappertest file) > my tomcat starts fine but then when running > ./tomcat status > it says the pid file is stale yet my wrapper and tomcat are running(and if I > kill tomcat, the wrapper restarts it). ie. my status and stop commands > completely don't work because of some pid problem. > > Here is data from my last run... > > pid file 4013 > > Then here is a typical ps...(4017 is tomcat and 4015 is wrapper, but no 4013 > exists...that must have been the shell file pid or something). > > root@builddragon:/opt/tomcat/ > wrapper-linux-x86-64-3.3.7# ps -ef | grep tomcat > root 4015 1 0 22:18 ? 00:00:00 > /opt/tomcat/wrapper-linux-x86-64-3.3.7/bin/./wrapper > /opt/tomcat/wrapper-linux-x86-64-3.3.7/bin/../conf/tomcat.conf > wrapper.syslog.ident=tomcat6 wrapper.pidfile=/opt/tomcat/tomcat6.pid > wrapper.name=tomcat6 wrapper.displayname=Tomcat6 Server wrapper.dae > monize=TRUE wrapper.statusfile=/opt/tomcat/tomcat6.status > wrapper.java.statusfile=/opt/tomcat/tomcat6.java.status > root 4017 4015 6 22:18 ? 00:00:29 /opt/jdk/bin/java > -Djava.endorsed.dirs=/opt/tomcat/bin:/opt/tomcat/common/endorsed > -Dcatalina.base=/opt/tomcat -Dcatalina.home=/opt/tomcat > -Djava.io.tmpdir=/opt/tomcat/temp > -Djava.library.path=/opt/tomcat/wrapper-linux-x86-64-3.3.7/lib -classpath > /opt/ > tomcat/wrapper-linux-x86-64-3.3.7/lib/wrapper.jar:/opt/jdk/lib/tools.jar:/opt/tomcat/bin/bootstrap.jar > -Dwrapper.key=Dq17CpXisAAYC-ed -Dwrapper.port=32001 > -Dwrapper.jvm.port.min=31000 -Dwrapper.jvm.port.max=31999 -Dwrapper.pid=4013 > -Dwrapper.version=3.3.7 -Dwrapper.native_library=wrapper -Dwrapper.s > ervice=TRUE -Dwrapper.cpu.timeout=10 -Dwrapper.jvmid=1 > org.tanukisoftware.wrapper.WrapperStartStopApp > org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap 1 start > org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap TRUE 1 stop > root 4296 27756 0 22:26 pts/0 00:00:00 grep tomcat > > NOTE: obvioulsy tomcat stop fails and tomcat status fails and deletes the > pid file which is wrong. I am starting to play with JSW for tomcat 3.3.7, 64 bit for fun. when I run ./tomcat start (tomcat was the wrappertest file) my tomcat starts fine but then when running ./tomcat status it says the pid file is stale yet my wrapper and tomcat are running(and if I kill tomcat, the wrapper restarts it). ie. my status and stop commands completely don't work because of some pid problem. Here is data from my last run... pid file 4013 Then here is a typical ps...(4017 is tomcat and 4015 is wrapper, but no 4013 exists...that must have been the shell file pid or something). root@builddragon:/opt/tomcat/ wrapper-linux-x86-64-3.3.7# ps -ef | grep tomcat root 4015 1 0 22:18 ? 00:00:00 /opt/tomcat/wrapper-linux-x86-64-3.3.7/bin/./wrapper /opt/tomcat/wrapper-linux-x86-64-3.3.7/bin/../conf/tomcat.conf wrapper.syslog.ident=tomcat6 wrapper.pidfile=/opt/tomcat/tomcat6.pid wrapper.name=tomcat6 wrapper.displayname=Tomcat6 Server wrapper.dae monize=TRUE wrapper.statusfile=/opt/tomcat/tomcat6.status wrapper.java.statusfile=/opt/tomcat/tomcat6.java.status root 4017 4015 6 22:18 ? 00:00:29 /opt/jdk/bin/java -Djava.endorsed.dirs=/opt/tomcat/bin:/opt/tomcat/common/endorsed -Dcatalina.base=/opt/tomcat -Dcatalina.home=/opt/tomcat -Djava.io.tmpdir=/opt/tomcat/temp -Djava.library.path=/opt/tomcat/wrapper-linux-x86-64-3.3.7/lib -classpath /opt/ tomcat/wrapper-linux-x86-64-3.3.7/lib/wrapper.jar:/opt/jdk/lib/tools.jar:/opt/tomcat/bin/bootstrap.jar -Dwrapper.key=Dq17CpXisAAYC-ed -Dwrapper.port=32001 -Dwrapper.jvm.port.min=31000 -Dwrapper.jvm.port.max=31999 -Dwrapper.pid=4013 -Dwrapper.version=3.3.7 -Dwrapper.native_library=wrapper -Dwrapper.s ervice=TRUE -Dwrapper.cpu.timeout=10 -Dwrapper.jvmid=1 org.tanukisoftware.wrapper.WrapperStartStopApp org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap 1 start org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap TRUE 1 stop root 4296 27756 0 22:26 pts/0 00:00:00 grep tomcat NOTE: obvioulsy tomcat stop fails and tomcat status fails and deletes the pid file which is wrong. When I kill tomcat, wrapper still starts it up fine but the pid file is all wrong. Also, the 4017 command above seems odd to me as it passes in all 7 arguments but the WrapperStartStopApp is supposed to only pass in the 2 start args and the 3 stop args I would think into the tomcat bootstrap process? anyone have any idea what is going on? thanks, Dean |

Hi, I am using Java Service Wrapper and I have the following problem when using it on Amazon EC2 machines. When I try to use an administrator user to launch the service, I get the following error: *wrapper | Unable to start the service - The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. (0x41d) ** * I only happens if I try to use a user that I create myself. However, if I use the predefined 'Administrator' user (that comes with the machine), it works fine. I compared the parameters of the admin user I created and the predefined one, and they look the same. Can you think what the problem may be? I tried it on several machines in Amazon and got the same problem. When I am trying it on my own lab machines, it doesn't happens. Thanks, Uri |

instantly.
* a new configuration variable to reference the Wrapper's PID in
configuration property values.
* the ability to receive updates in Java whenever the Wrapper's
log file is rolled.
* (Professional Edition)it is also now possible to send alert
emails to multiple email address.
This version also contains a few minor bug fixes. Please see the

Hi,
Actually I switched back to the previous approach (integration method 1) and
adding shutdown hook in my main class.
...
Runtime.getRuntime ( ).addShutdownHook ( new Thread ( )
{
public void run ( )
{
if ( logService.isInfoEnabled ( ) )
{
logService.info ( "shutting down the print service"
);
}
try
{
printService.stop();
}
catch ( ApplicationException e )
{
if ( logService.isErrorEnabled ( ) )
{
logService.error ( "error stopping print
service", null, null, e );
}
}
}
} );
...
Everything is working fine now.

Riyaz,
Looking over your code, it appears to be written correctly with one
exception. The problem is that your MyWrapperApplication class does
not define its own main method. This means that it falls back to the
WrapperSimpleApp class's main method which creates a WrapperSimpleApp
instance, not a MyWrapperApplication instance.
Please add a method like the following to your class and it should
start working:
public static void main( String args[] )
{
new MyWrapperApplication( args );
}
Please let me know if you still have problems getting it work and I
will take another look.
Cheers,
Leif

Hi,
I tried extending WrapperSimpleApp to implement stop method and added some
debugging statements. It seems to be not executing. What is the best way to
implement shutdown hook?
class:
public class MyWrapperApplication extends WrapperSimpleApp
{
....
....
@Override
public int stop ( int exitCode )
{
if ( logService.isInfoEnabled ( ) )
{
logService.info ( "Print Service Shutting down." );
}
return super.stop ( exitCode );
}
}
configuration:
#********************************************************************
# Wrapper Properties
#********************************************************************
# Java Application
wrapper.java.command=java
# Java Main class. This class must implement the WrapperListener interface
# or guarantee that the WrapperManager class is initialized. Helper
# classes are provided to do this for you. See the Integration section
# of the documentation for details.
wrapper.java.mainclass=printservice.bootstrap.MyWrapperApplication
# Java Classpath (include wrapper.jar) Add class path elements as
# needed starting from 1
wrapper.java.classpath.1=../wrapperLib/wrapper.jar
wrapper.java.classpath.2=../applicationLib/*.jar
wrapper.java.library.path.1=../wrapperLib
# Java Library Path (location of Wrapper.DLL or libwrapper.so)
# Java Additional Parameters
# Initial Java Heap Size (in MB)
#wrapper.java.initmemory=3
# Maximum Java Heap Size (in MB)
wrapper.java.maxmemory=64

Mehul, The Development License Keys are all tied to a particular application, and not the server. This means that you will need to generate a Key for each of the applications that you run on each server. The Development License allows you to generate multiple keys so this does not involve any extra expense on your part. We have the Development license at the place where I work. We are trying to use the license on multiple wrappers running on the same system. Is this something we can do. Riyaz, Please be sure to read over the wrapper.ntservice.account property thoroughly as the account must be setup in the control panel correctly so it will be able to run services. http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.org/doc/english/prop-ntservice-account.html To set the password, use the following property: http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.org/doc/english/prop-ntservice-password.html Towards the bottom of the file, you will see ways to avoid including the password in the configuration file if that is a concern. Hi Christian and Hubert, thanks a lot.. When I right click and select service proiperties, and under Log On tab select This Account with my user name and password, I was able to start the service SUCCESSFULLY. Only thing, how do I provide password on configuration file. Is it possible. Because I want to provide similar details via config file. As link explained, I tried setting account property in config file but it didn't work . wrapper.ntservice.account=.\mindtree\m1002575 error: wrapper | CreateService failed - The account name is invalid or does not exist, or the password is invalid for the account name specified. Hi Riyaz & Hubert, Hubert is fast and right. When running as a service, the Wrapper and its JVM, will by default be running as the Windows SYSTEM user. This user does not have the ability to access network drives or printers. It is also possible to run as a specific user account to gain access to network drives etc: http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.org/doc/english/prop-ntservice-account.html I think this should work out for you. Hi, Probabely: Your printers are stored under a user account, that's why it works from batch file. As your service runs under the account "system", you don't have access to the printers configured for that certain user account. You 'll have to run your service with the same user account as you configured the printers. Hubert >>> Riyaz Saiyed <riy...@mi...> 07.10.2009 11:07 >>> Hi, We've a printing application that takes a printer name as argument and load that printer.I've configured tanuki wrapper to start and stop this application. If I start this application via running a batch file, it work perfectly. But if I install this application as windows service an run application via starting a service, it does not load printer. The exception message I get here is : "Can not load specified printer : MTW_Printer. Printer not found." With batch file approach, it locates printer : "Specified Printer found : Win32 Printer : \\172.22.192.230\MTW_Printerr" Here both the messages are application specific and application generates it when it tries to load printer. Andy, Sorry for the delay getting back to you. Yes that would do it. See the error message: java.lang.IllegalAccessException: Class org.tanukisoftware.wrapper.WrapperSimpleApp can not access a member of class xml2db.ExcelDataImporter with modifiers "public static" I will think about how to make the meaning of the error a bit clearer. Hi again, For the forums completeness. I solved the problem. The class was defined as just class myClass by changing to public class myClass the error is gone. /Andy --- On Mon, 10/5/09, Andreas Karlsson <and...@ya...> wrote: > From: Andreas Karlsson <and...@ya...> > Subject: [Wrapper-user] WrapperSimpleApp can not access a member of class myClass with modifiers "public static" > To: wra...@li... > Date: Monday, October 5, 2009, 8:26 PM > Hi guys, > I'm trying to launch a small application as a windows > service. > The java program runs fine as a stand-alone but I get an > error complaining about not finding the main-method when > trying to launch it from the Wrapper. Hi guys, I'm trying to launch a small application as a windows service. The java program runs fine as a stand-alone but I get an error complaining about not finding the main-method when trying to launch it from the Wrapper. Hello, I am wondering if the 64 bit version of the wrapper executable and .so need to be run on a 64 bit Solaris machine in order to handle the system signals properly or if the 32 bit version will work correctly? I know on a 64 bit version of Windows, if the 32 bit version of the wrapper is used the java processes will stop when the user logs off the box, but I am wondering if it is the same case with Solaris too. Thanks, Ian Koelliker |

Vadim, This is possible with the Professional Edition of the Java Service Wrapper using the following configuration: wrapper.event.jvm_prelaunch.command.argv.1=/usr/bin/mycleanup wrapper.event.jvm_prelaunch.command.argv.2=parameter1 wrapper.event.jvm_prelaunch.command.block=TRUE wrapper.event.jvm_prelaunch.command.block.timeout=5 The block properties will tell the Wrapper to wait until the command has completed or timeout after the specified amount of time. There properties are described in more detail here: http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.org/doc/english/props-event.html#command The full list of possible events when commands can be executed is here: http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.org/doc/english/props-event.html#events We would be happy to provide you with a trial license of the Professional edition if you wish to test this out. http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.org/doc/english/download.jsp Sincerely, Leif Mortenson Tanuki Software, Ltd. Thanks Lief for your time !! I was able to solve the problem this morning. For some reason, I had to change the ownership to ADMINISTRATOR on the windows box though the creator of windows service ( and = the owner the password file) was also admin on the box. Also the error was "Failed in reading password file" which misled in believing that it wasn't a permission issue but something else. Subject: Re: [Wrapper-user] wrapper + JMX, Failed in reading password file Shashank, Where is the ../config/jmxremote.password file relative to the location of the wrapper binary? By default, the Wrapper and JVM's working directory will be set to the location of the wrapper binary. The working directory depends on where Java is launched when running standalone. The Wrapper forces the working directory location to make the application run consistently. If you still have the problem, please send me your wrapper.conf file and a description of where the relevant files are located. Hi, I'm running a java application through wrapper under windows XP with java 1.6.0_16 . When I run the application outside wrapper through a bat file, it works fine and I'm able to access my mBeans. But when I try to start the application as a windows service implemented through wrapper, I get the following error: "Error: Failed in reading the password file: ../config/jmxremote.password" . This is probably not a file permissions issue as I've verified the windows permissions and they are equivalent of 600. The jmxremote.password is out of the jmx password file. Anyone encountered this problem before or any other suggestions?
