Hi. Just to share our solution to this problem. We need to upgrade wrapper on various OSes and do it via shell script that stops service copies files and starts the service. Indeed, restarting the service usually requires additional permissions, and there are cases when upgrade does not complete and needs manual intervention (i.e. to start the upgraded service). It worth a notion that we evaluated the possibility of having additional "upgrader" service, which will do all the work. The thing is that if the original service has the needed credentials, then the procedure described above will work anyway. But if the customer does not want to provide needed credentials, then upgrader service will not work also. It seems that if wrapper had a possibility to replace its files, it would work best way. The wrapper process should be able to replace files it has opened and then restart. *Mirron Rozanov **R&D* | *Nolio* *C*:972-52-8703899 *O*:972-9-9597305 *E:*:mi...@no... Lars, Windows unfortunately does not allow this directly as all open files are locked. As long as the Wrapper.exe is running you will not be able to update it. This will be a problem with all of the jar and DLL files as well. The solution is to actually stop the Wrapper and run another process to do the update. Then once the wrapper and your application have been updated, you will want to restart the service. If you are running on the desktop, this will be fairly easy. But if running as a service, you will need a way to do this in the background using a process that has all of the required permissions to 1) replace the files, and 2) to stop and start the service. The later will need to be an elevated account. We will discuss options here as well. I would personally suggest having 2 services setup, leave the live one running, update the standby one, then switch them over. This would minimise downtime. Hi I have made a service that uses the service wrapper. I need to update the service from time to time and for this I implemented a file transfer method. This works fine, I copy the files over the network to the destination and restart the computer. The only problem is that the wrapper.exe and wrapper.dll are in use and can not be overwritten. So updating my service does not include wrapper.exe and wrapper.dll. I would like to update all files including the two, is there a way to do this? Can I shutdown wrapper.exe and have my service continue to run? Thanks in advance! Lars |

Eng, Sorry for the delay. What version of the Wrapper are you using? The Wrapper will try to roll the log file for every line logged, but if it is being locked by another process it will not be able to do so. As soon as you clear the lock, the next line logged should cause the log file to be rolled. We added some code in 3.5.6 to improve the way the Wrapper handles these cases You should now see the following in your log when the Wrapper first fails to roll the log file: wrapper | Unable to rename log file ..\logs\wrapper.log to ..\logs\wrapper.log.1. File is in use by another application. Hello Abhishek, could you please enable debug output by setting 'wrapper.debug=true' in your conf file? The only thing the log file from your mail shows that there is something wrong with your log4j configuration. Apart from that it appears that the JVM exited normally. I hope to get a better understanding about what's going on, after seeing your debug log file. Best Regards, Christian Mueller Tanuki Software, Ltd. Hi, You should be able to solve this behaviour by adding/modifying the wrapper.ping.timeout setting i your wrapper.conf file (http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.com/doc/english/prop-ping-timeout.html) The default value is 30 seconds. I usually set the value to about 180 second for The JBoss service (instance) we use to run our own serversoftware. // MEk Gustaf Cele skrev 2012-07-19 17:41: > We're running a JBoss server as a service under Windows using the Java Service Wrapper. Gustaf, Please see the ping timeout documentation for a description of how this is working. http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.com/doc/english/prop-ping-timeout.html Also this: http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.com/doc/english/qna-freeze.html Try setting the ping timeout to a long value like 5 minutes. If that makes the problem go away then it is a temporary freeze. If it is still being restarted however, then your JVM is actually freezing and the Wrapper is doing its job correctly. If you find that it is a temporary freeze, you need to figure out what is causing the JVM to become unresponsive for so long. The default ping timeout is 30 seconds, which is a long time for the JVM to be stuck. One common cause of long freezes is if the JVM is being swapped to disk due to other applications consuming all available memory. We are constantly making improvements to the Wrapper. 3.2.3 was released way back in 2006. There have been a LOT of improvements since then. Both in features, and in performance and improvements. I would suggest that you give a newer version a try. As the warning in the log is clearly stating, you are not successfully reading in the wrapper.dll file. This is not in any way the cause of your current problem. But there are several features which will not be working without the DLL. We have added a new feature to the upcoming 3.5.16 release which will make this particular issue easier to track down by requesting that the Wrapper log a warning whenever a ping is slower than a configured threshold. It will be possible to set that to 5 seconds, but the actual timeout to 5 minutes for example so you can let it run for a few days and see how often, and for how long, you are having temporary freezes. I can understand your request very well, but unfortunately it's currently not possible to pass any additional parameters to the service when starting from the command line. Actually this is not a completely trivial task, since the command line of the service is being set during the installation. When you start the Wrapper in order to start a service, the Wrapper interacts with the Windows Service Control Manager and tells it to start the Service. If you want to pass an additional parameter to the JVM during installation via the command line, then this can be done for instance rather easily using the '--' parameter: bin\wrapper.exe -i ..\conf\wrapper.conf -- myParam1 myParam2 [...] Everything preceding the '--' will be passed through the Wrapper to the Java Application. Now every time the service is being started, the parameters specified during installation are passed to your application. If you now want to alter those parameters each time you start the Service, you actually would have to update the Service each time. This can be done similar to the procedure as above, using the parameter '-u' (update) bin\wrapper.exe -u ..\conf\wrapper.conf -- myNewParam1 myNewParam2 [...] and then start the service, e.g.: bin\wrapper.exe -t ..\conf\wrapper.conf We could probably add a new parameter to update the service each time it starts a service (and parameters are being passed through) However, please note that updating a service requires additional security permissions than only starting (SERVICE_QUERY_CONFIG and SERVICE_CHANGE_CONFIG privileges are additionally required). Another way of implementing something similar would be to define a "parameter file". All additional parameters would be written into that file, e.g.: myPara1 myPara2 [...] and in the conf file something like this would be specified: wrapper.java.app.parameterfile=myParameterFile.txt This way, the same functionally would become available on non-Windows systems as well, rather than implementing something very platform specific... Please let me know what you think about my suggestions. Thank you, Christian Mueller Tanuki Software, Ltd. We have parameters for our java application set up in our config files and those are working fine. But we want to be able to send an additional parameter when we start the service. Can we send a parameter from the command line when starting a service? And how do we recognize that this is a parameter that we want to send on to the java application? That is, I want to be able to start the service with a command such as "sc start service1 parm1=potatoes" and have "potatoes" sent as a specific argument to my java application. Thanks. Hi Team, I have the following scenario: Two physical boxes. each running a java service of our application. Wrapper is being used in both cases. My query is that if a windows command "net stop myservice" is executed on one of them. Would it be possible to configure the wrapper in such a way that it looks up the service on the other box( I have a script for doing this) and if the JAVA service is not running on the second instance then the wrapper aborts the command of stopping this jvm instance. This becomes a requirement to avoid human error where one brings down both the instances in case of a maintenance, and having a complete outage. I went through the documentation and found that imlementing such a thing might be possible using "Event Commands" in the following way. wrapper.event.jvm_kill.command.argv.1="myscript to check the other instance" wrapper.event.jvm_kill.command.argv.2=parameter1 wrapper.event.jvm_kill.command.block=TRUE wrapper.event.jvm_kill.command.on_exit.0=SHUTDOWN/CONTINUE I am a bit confused about the event command on_exit. What do SHUTDOWN and CONTINUE mean. I may be entirly wrong with my understanding. It would be great if someone can help me achieve the above listed scenario if it is possible. Thanks, Sunny |

Hello Ed, It sounds like you are having the following properties (or similar) defined in your conf file: wrapper.app.parameter.1=org.jboss.Main wrapper.app.parameter.2=-c wrapper.app.parameter.3=production If you change the value of wrapper.app.parameter.3 you can specify a different profile. We also have a detailed explanation of how to integrate the Wrapper with JBoss on our website: http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.co.jp/doc/english/integrate-simple-win.html Please let me know if you have any further questions.
