Apparently I should pay better attention when I RTFM. I had mistakenly set the wrapper.java.mainclass to my class instead of the WrapperSimpleApp class. It works like a champ now. Sean -----Original Message----- From: Pritchard, Sean Sent: Monday, December 30, 2002 3:01 PM To: Wrapper User mailing list (E-mail) Subject: [Wrapper-user] Startup failed: Timed out waiting for signal from JVM Hi, I'm having trouble launching my program using the wrapper. I'm using Sun's JDK 1.4.1.01 on Windows 2000. I'm attempting to launch my program in console mode from a batch file. The batch file is a slight modification of the one used for the Test Wrapper example. My app runs fine when launched without wrapper. I turned on console debugging and have pasted my console output below. The strange part in this is my application seems to successfully start based on my app's log statements. So I'm not sure why wrapper thinks it hasn't started. I checked my netstat to ensure there wasn't a port conflict for 1777 and changed the port (just to be sure) but it didn't help. Yes I kind of missed that in the docs, and it so niclely stated this:
-----
Class to execute when the wrapper starts the application. If your
application implements WrapperListener, then this will be that main class.
Otherwise, this should be com.silveregg.wrapper.WrapperSimpleApp Then your
main class will be listed as the first application parameter below.
-----
Don't know why I didn't see the trees for the forrest, but thankyou for
helping me out here :)

Soren,
Correct me if I am wrong, but 9 times out of 10 this error is caused
by not reading the
documentation :-) Please take a look at the following page:
http://wrapper.sourceforge.net/doc/english/api-overview.html
In most cases, you will want to use the WrapperSimpleApp method of
launching your
application.
Also try enabling Debug output and make sure that you see the Java
side of the
Wrapper being initialized.
Cheers,
Leif

I have made a Java application that I want to start as a NT service. My Java application runs fine when started manually, and it is not under hevy load at all. When the wrapper starts it as a service, I keep getting the following error, and the wrapper seems to killing my Java app: --------------- Startup failed: Timed out waiting for signal from JVM. Java Virtual Machine did not exit on request, terminated --------------- The funny thing is that the Java application works fine until the wrapper stops it. The wrapper keeps restarting my Java app., so in a sense it keeps running, but why does it restart it???? Any ideas? P.S. I'm running Sun Java 1.4.1.01 on a Windows 2000 Server. Hmm,
I got this request once before. The problem is that the Java
process is actually being
run in the background. The process that is receiving the input is
actually the Wrapper.
To make this work, I would have to look at the input and decide what
should be processed
by the Wrapper and what should be forwarded on to Java.
The reverse with output is easy because the output from Java and the
Wrapper are simply
merged.
I'll take a look at it again. Obviously any keys used by the
Wrapper would not be sent
to the Java process however. Can you post a Feature Request on this so
you be kept up to
date on its status?
Cheers,
Leif

Hi, my java program use data read from standard input (System.in). Is there a way to use the standard input in my java program if this program is starded by the wrapper ? With regards Laurent |

I used log4j to very easily add a console GUI like this :
Logger TopLog =
Logger.getLogger("com.your.top.package");
LF5Appender gui = new LF5Appender();
gui.setName("LF5 GUI active.");
TopLog.addAppender(gui);
gui.setThreshold(Level.toLevel(MyConfig.getAsString("LoggingLevel")));

I would not say that this is a *major* flaw. Yes, most *apps* have a GUI,
but isn't Wrapper primarly intended for servers and other programs
running in the backgroud (which usually don't have a GUI)?
I do, however, agree that it would be nice if Wrapper supports GUI. But I
wouldn't give this the highest priority.

You must have the following in your config file: wrapper.java.library.path=C:/WINNT/System32 > Initializing WrapperManager native library. > Are you installing the Wrapper.DLL file into the C:/WINNT/System32 directory? That will work, but it will mean that all applications on a given machine will have to be using the same version of the Wrapper. I usually keep the Wrapper.DLL and Wrapper.exe files with the application being installed. That also keeps the Windows directory from getting cluttered. (Just personal preference though) > Cannot load npjavanative3: > java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no npjavanative3 in java.library.path > at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibrary(ClassLoader.java:1312) > at java.lang.Runtime.loadLibrary0(Runtime.java:749) > at java.lang.System.loadLibrary(System.java:820) > at > com.vitria.roi.javanative.XportNativeImpl.<init>(XportNativeImpl.java:34) > This error usually means that the npjavanative3.DLL file can not be found on the java.library.path. I assume that this is a DLL that is specific to your application? Please verify that it exists. If you wish, starting with Wrapper version 2.2.9 (The one you are running) you can specify multiple directories in the library search path. wrapper.java.library.path.1=C:/WINNT/System32 wrapper.java.library.path.2=C:/Program Files/AppHome/lib Can you go back and check the command you are using to launch your application when not using the Wrapper. Make sure that there are not any other directories where libraries are being loaded. Note that the current directory will only be searched if it is included in the path: wrapper.java.library.path.1=C:/WINNT/System32 wrapper.java.library.path.2=./ >All the paths and libraries are OK in the conf file. > My only guess right now is that your npjavanative3.DLL file is not being found. :-/ Cheers, Leif |

Mikael Ståldal wrote: >I do, however, agree that it would be nice if Wrapper supports GUI. But I >wouldn't give this the highest priority. > My thinking was also along the lines that the Wrapper be be used for server applications. In the fact the original Application that I wrote if for had a GUI that could be run when used as a console application. But when installed as a service, it was unavailable. In that mode, the application was usually running in a rack someplace. We had a web based interface to allow for remote administration. But that said, users have been finding all kinds of uses for the Wrapper that I had never thought of. There have been a few people asking for the ability to interact with the desktop. So I went ahead and implemented it. It has been checked into CVS for the last few days and will be in the next release. I have once seen this exception thrown on my app. My solution to this =
was updating JDK to 1.4.1. I believe its a JDK specific problem.
Good luck!

I would not say that this is a *major* flaw. Yes, most *apps* have a GUI, but isn't Wrapper primarly intended for servers and other programs running in the backgroud (which usually don't have a GUI)? I do, however, agree that it would be nice if Wrapper supports GUI. But I wouldn't give this the highest priority. |

The trick was to set the following in the startup info attribute when=20

startup_info.dwFlags=3DSTARTF_USESHOWWINDOW | STARTF_USESTDHANDLES;

I figured out how to allow Java to display a GUI while it is being run as a service. :-D BUT! It will also display a console window at the same time. :-( I am currently creating the java process with the processflags: CREATE_NEW_PROCESS_GROUP In this mode, all features of the Wrapper work correctly, but there is just that ugly console window to deal with. If I change the processFlags to: CREATE_NEW_PROCESS_GROUP | DETACHED_PROCESS then the console window goes away. In this mode I am still able to capture all output from the JVM for logging purposes. The problem is that in this mode, It does not seem to be possible to intercept system signals. This means that the Wrapper will kill the JVM if the user logs out. Furthermore, the Wrapper views this as if the user had hit CTRL-C so the Wrapper will also exit. In addition some features, like invoking a Thread Dump from within the JVM also fail. So this does not seem to be a valid option. I will look into this some more, but it is all coming back to me from when I had looked into this about a year ago... :-( If anyone knows how to intercept and generate system signals in a detached process, I would love to hear from you. Kevin,
From the log, it looks like you are trying to run your application
as a Service. The current version of the Wrapper does not allow the
Java process to access the desktop when running in that mode. That is
why you can not see your GUI.
If you run in console mode, then you should be able to see the GUI
without any problems.
There is currently an open feature request to allow access to the
desktop when run as a service. I have to figure out how to get it
working though :-)
Cheers,
Leif

I am using the WrapperSimpleApp method to call my main, which constructs my mainFrame, calls mainFrame.show();, and then does some other stuff on startup. Well, I see the output of the other stuff, but the GUI never pops up, minimized or otherwise. I turned debug level to DEBUG, but didnt get an errors. Help!!!!!!!! -Kevin ps. Changes for this patch were in wrapper.c, wrapper.h, wrapper_win.c and
several
other files for docs. But because there have been several other changes
since the
last release, I would suggest doing a full checkout from CVS. Take a
look at
https://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=39428
fot the anon CVS access string.
Cheers,
Leif

Prasad,
I think I got this implemented. Have tested it on a Windows 2000=20
Pro machine,
an XP Home machine, but still need to test on an XP Pro machine tonight. =
It is all
checked into CVS, so if you have the ability to check out the CVS=20
version, you
might want to give it a try.
Also, my machines are all in Japanese and I am trying to write the=20
English
documentation. If your machine is english, could you please check the=20
following
text and make sure that it is accurate for the english version of=20
Windows. Some
of the text may need to be changed slightly. (I got the text by=20
translating from
Japanese, so it may not be quite the same.:-)
