I identifed the origin of my problem and was able to solve it. Here is my solution : The problem was that JWS started a second JVM to run my application. I finally found out that JWS don't always do this. It first try to find out if the current JVM is suitable for the application, and then decide if the application needs a second JVM instance. To see if the current JVM is suitable, JWS compares things such as the heap size, the path to the javaw.exe command, and so on. In my case the path was different : the command path used by the wrapper was "C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_04\bin" and the 1.4 JRE defined in JWS was in "C:\bin\j2sdk1.4.2_04\bin". I only changed the wrapper's javax.exe path and my problem was solved : - I start the Windiws NT service - it launches my application and updates it - the same JVM then runs my application => the windows service is no more considered as stopped Thanks to Leif Mortenson for his suggestion to figure out the command generated by JWS to launch that second JVM Didier D > De : "did...@vo..." > > Hi, > > I'm using the Java Service Wrapper to launch a Java Web Start application as a NT Service (W2000). To do so, I followed the instructions given here : > > > My application runs fine, but in the Service Panel, my service is showed as 'not running'. > I investigated a bit and found out that : > - the wrapper launches a JVM for JWS > - JWS launches another JVM for my application > - the JWS JVM ends normally and my application still runs fine > - the wrapper ends and the service is showed as 'not running' > - my application is still running as a 'javaw.exe' process in the windows task manager. > > The fact that the service is not showed as 'running' is confusing. I ran the wrapper with log output set to DEBUG. The logs indicate that = the wrapper detected what it thought was a hung JVM, attempted to launch = a new JVM, had a problem binding to port 8081, then shutdown everything. = This is my recurring problem. I'm including the debug output below. = Questions: 1) Is it possible the wrapper incorrectly identifies the JVM as hung? 2) If so, how/why? Is there a timeout setting that can be increased to = force the wrapper to attempt communication with the JVM longer before = giving up? 3) In the log "ERROR | wrapper | 2005/04/01 14:30:08 | Java Virtual = Machine did not exit on request, terminated" appears. It seems the = wrapper is attempting to stop that hung JVM before launching a new one. = Does "terminated" mean the JVM or the wrapper action was terminated? If = it's the JVM, why is port 8081 not released? If it's the wrapper, why = can't the JVM be killed? 4) in general, if the JVM is really hung, what can create this state? Bottom line: it appears the wrapper is trying to recover a JVM in a bad = state but it is failing. Are there any configuration settings I can = modify to help the wrapper successfully recover or initialize a JVM? = Thanks. Thanks for the reply Leif.
The key piece of information was that Wrapper runs as a different user by
default when run as a service vs as a console.
I uninstalled the service then added the line:
wrapper.ntservice.account=DOMAIN\username
to wrapper.conf. I then reinstalled the service.
Then (in Win2k) I added that same DOMAIN\username to "Control Panel /
Administrative Tools / Local Security Policy / Local Policies / User Rights
Assignments / Log on as Service / Security ... / Add ..."
Then I modified the properties of the installed (Wrapper) service so that it
would log on as the same DOMAIN\username as above by changing "Control Panel
/ Administrative Tools / Services / (Wrapper Service) Properties / Log on
(tab) / "This Account ... ".
Incidentally, with an NT machine, the process is a bit more straight
forward. After modifying wrapper.conf and installing the service, update
the service properties by setting "Log on as this account" to
DOMAIN\username. WinNT then indicated that the "Log on as Service Right
Assignment" was automatically made to that DOMAIN\username.
Thanks a bunch for pointing me in the right direction.

Ted,
Unless you have specified an account to run as in the wrapper.conf
file, the Wrapper
will run as the SYSTEM user when running as an NT service. When run as
a console
app, it is run as the user you have logged in as.
From the error message, my first guess is that the file that stores the
ODBC
data source data. Make sure that the SYSTEM user has access to that file.
Another common mistake is to declare the ODBC data source for the
current user rather than as a system-wide data source. If you do this then
your
user will be able to see it, but the SYSTEM user will not.
Post back with the results.
Cheers,
Leif

My application runs off two datasources. One datasource uses a pure jdbc driver (to get to MySQL) and the other uses the jdbc:odbc bridge to reach Access. When I run the application as a Console as in --> Wrapper Started as Console everything runs super fine. When I run the application as a Service as in --> Wrapper Started as Service the pure jdbc datasource performs properly but the odbc datasource bombs :( I get (from wrapper.log only when running the application as a service): >java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] >The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file '(unknown)'. >It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data. > >at sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbc.createSQLException(JdbcOdbc.java:6958) >at sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbc.standardError(JdbcOdbc.java:7115) >at sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbc.SQLDriverConnect(JdbcOdbc.java:3074) >at sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcConnection.initialize(JdbcOdbcConnection.java:323) >at sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver.connect(JdbcOdbcDriver.java:174) >at java.sql.DriverManager.getConnection(DriverManager.java:512) >at java.sql.DriverManager.getConnection(DriverManager.java:171) etc. The mdb (Access) datasource is set up without any username / password required. Why does everything work fine when run as a Console but not as a Service? I read the other ODBC thread from 8/2004 but that didn't seem to shine much light on my problem. The ODBC datasource is set up as "System DSN". I am having this problem on NT4 as well as on Win2k. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks. |

Didier,
The problem is that the Wrapper is doing its job of correctly
launching a JVM and
then shutting down when that application is complete. The JWS app is
launching an
external child javaw process to actually run your application. This
second JVM is
not visible to the Wrapper and is left running happily.
A few users have asked similar questions this year, but I have not
yet come up
with a good solution for handling this kind of thing from the scope of
the Wrapper.
The quickest solution for you would be to figure out the command
generated by
JWS to launch that second JVM, then create a wrapper.conf file to have
the Wrapper
launch it directly.
Another solution would be to make the parent JVM stay alive for the
life of the
child, but this gets complicated when you start thinking about the
possibility of either
JVM crashing of freezing up.
Cheers,
Leif

Hi, I'm using the Java Service Wrapper to launch a Java Web Start application as a NT Service (W2000). To do so, I followed the instructions given here : <http://www.seajug.org/vqwiki/jsp/Wiki?JavaWebStartTips> My application runs fine, but in the Service Panel, my service is showed as 'not running'. I investigated a bit and found out that : - the wrapper launches a JVM for JWS - JWS launches another JVM for my application - the JWS JVM ends normally and my application still runs fine - the wrapper ends and the service is showed as 'not running' - my application is still running as a 'javaw.exe' process in the windows task manager. The fact that the service is not showed as 'running' is confusing. The admin may want to start my application again and again. So, is there a way to avoid this behavior? To illustrate this, here is the output for a console execution : C:\bin\wrapper>Wrapper.exe -c wrapper.conf wrapper | --> Wrapper Started as Console wrapper | Using system timer. wrapperp | server listening on port 1777. wrapper | Launching a JVM... wrapper | command: "C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_04\bin\javaw.exe" -Djnlpx.deployment.system.home="C:\WINNT\Sun\Java\Deployment" -Djnlpx.heapsize=NULL,NULL -DtrustProxy?=true -Djnlpx.deployment.user.home="C:\Documents and Settings\dduquennoy\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment" -Djnlpx.jvm="C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_04\bin\javaw.exe" -Djava.security.policy="file:/C:\batch/wrapper.policy" -Djnlpx.home="C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_04\javaws" -Dwrapper.home="C:\batch" -Djnlpx.remove=false -Djnlpx.offline=true -Xms15m -Xmx15m -Djava.library.path="." -classpath "wrapper.jar;C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_04\javaws\javaws.jar;C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_04\javaws\javaws-l10n.jar" -Dwrapper.key="IQDTkRUQsJMB39d5" -Dwrapper.port=1777 -Dwrapper.debug="TRUE" -Dwrapper.use_system_time="TRUE" -Dwrapper.version="3.1.2" -Dwrapper.native_library="wrapper" -Dwrapper.cpu.timeout="10" -Dwrapper.jvmid=1 org.tanukisoftware.wrapper.WrapperSimpleApp com.sun.javaws.Main http://JWSServ/JWSProvider/myApp.jnlp wrapper | JVM started (PID=1692) jvm 1 | WrapperManager class initialized by thread: main Using classloader: sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader@1ff5ea7 jvm 1 | Wrapper Manager: JVM #1 jvm 1 | Wrapper Manager: Registering shutdown hook jvm 1 | Wrapper Manager: Using wrapper jvm 1 | Loaded native library: wrapper.dll jvm 1 | Calling native initialization method. jvm 1 | Initializing WrapperManager native library. jvm 1 | Java Executable: C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_04\bin\javaw.exe jvm 1 | Windows version: 5.0.2195 jvm 1 | Java Version : 1.4.2_04-b05 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM jvm 1 | Java VM Vendor : Sun Microsystems Inc. jvm 1 | jvm 1 | Wrapper (Version 3.1.2) http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.org jvm 1 | jvm 1 | WrapperManager.start(org.tanukisoftware.wrapper.WrapperSimpleApp@8965fb, args["http://JWSServ/JWSProvider/myApp.jnlp"]) called by thread: main jvm 1 | Open socket to wrapper... jvm 1 | Opened Socket jvm 1 | Send a packet KEY : IQDTkRUQsJMB39d5 jvm 1 | handleSocket(Socket[addr=/127.0.0.1,port=1777,localport=2815]) wrapperp | accepted a socket from 127.0.0.1 on port 2815 wrapperp | read a packet KEY : IQDTkRUQsJMB39d5 wrapper | Got key from JVM: IQDTkRUQsJMB39d5 wrapperp | send a packet LOW_LOG_LEVEL : 1 wrapperp | send a packet PING_TIMEOUT : 30 wrapper | Start Application. wrapperp | send a packet START : start jvm 1 | Received a packet LOW_LOG_LEVEL : 1 jvm 1 | Wrapper Manager: LowLogLevel from Wrapper is 1 jvm 1 | Received a packet PING_TIMEOUT : 30 jvm 1 | Wrapper Manager: PingTimeout from Wrapper is 30000 jvm 1 | Received a packet START : start jvm 1 | calling listener.start() jvm 1 | WrapperSimpleApp: start(args) jvm 1 | WrapperSimpleApp: invoking main method jvm 1 | WrapperSimpleApp: main method completed jvm 1 | WrapperSimpleApp: start(args) end. The second dll by default follows the standard rules for Windows loading. That is it has to be on the environment path (not the classpath or the library path the real Windows path). This implicitly always includes the current directory, that is, the directory that the application starts from. So this may be the easiest place to put it if you want some separation. There are some other choices. Immediately I can think of these. You could put your directory on the environment path by modifying the wrapper code, or you could explicitly load the second dll. Hello,
Does anyone know how to start a wrapper as a user from rc.local?
su user -c /home/path/to/tomcat/bin/tomcat start
I just get error with wrapper spitting out the commands it can utilize
{ console | start | stop | restart | status | dump } etc
The above does not work. However, this does:
su user -c /home/path/to/tomcat/bin/startup.sh
Documentation suggest to setup symlink, but that starts up the wrapper as root.
Any ideas? THANKS!

But it doesn't help. In case the JVM exists unexpectedly the wrapper does restart. I am developing an application where it is undesirable for the wrapper to restart in case of an error. |

Can anyone explain when I run a simple program in console mode it takes about 6 sceonds to end. I have a simple hello world program that takes .13 seconds to run with java. When run with the wrapper it runs just as quick but then takes about 6 sceonds to return to the command line. |

What features would be lost if wrapper.exe ran the jvm in the same process (via JNI)? From looking at the code the wrapper starts the JVM (in a separate process) then connects to it over a socket to make sure it is still "living and breathing". The JVM churns away at it's task and the wrapper has the wrappereventloop.c stuff run every tenth of a second. If running in the same process the wrapper event loop could run in a separate (non-java) thread. My question is if the JVM crashes (IBM jvm's lock up,SUN's jvm crashes hard) would they kill the wrapper event loop thread? Fairly sure on the IBM jvm it wouldn't. Need to see what would happen on the SUN jvm. To save everyone from the obvious I totally agree having wrapper and run in separate processes is the most reliable and for mission critical stuff I will always do that. There are use cases for the same process. My need is I have several servers that can have up to 30 wrappers running ( = 60 processes). 3 of which are mission critical the rest are "background" batch tasks that can be easily restarted and pick up where they left off (which is exactly what we do under load). Some more thoughts on this. I think crash detection is likely not to work reliably. I can think of page faults as an example where the whole process would get killed. Conversely many features would work fine restarts from within jvm app, ctrl-c and ctrl-break trapping, anchor file restarts, cross platform scripting, jvm deadlock. Anyways looking forward to hearing people's thoughts... |

Those changes worked for the most part. I can successfully build in the
gui now by loading the (.dsp) vc++ 6 project files with .net .net
converted them to vc++ 7 (i.e. .net) and the build works.
Since with the first error (errors are at the bottom) it should have
created release and the second error it can't find any files I get the
impression that something is creating/looking in the wrong directory for
stuff..
Any hints/suggestions? I can do what I need to do since the GUI build
works fine and the build.bat gets far enough to create all the files
from the .in files. Was thinking that if we get this all worked out I
could sum it up for a faq entry.

Does anyone know how to start a wrapper as a user from rc.local? su user -c /home/path/to/tomcat/bin/tomcat start I just get error with wrapper spitting out the commands it can utilize start | stop | restart etc The above does not work. However, this does: su user -c /home/path/to/tomcat/bin/startup.sh Any ideas? John |

This is probably a dumb question on my part. But whats the best way to test the wrapper? Are there ways to get tomcat to hang, overload, cause memory leak to see how the wrapper handles the situations? Thanks! John |
