Carsten,
It is technically possible to make the Wrapper launch the JVM
directly as a DLL.
The problem there is that if the JVM crashed, so would the Wrapper as
they would
be one and the same. The Wrapper would simply become another way to launch
the JVM, there would be no monitoring or error recovery features.
As you mentioned, other solutions like that already exist out there.
Cheers,
Leif

Hi, I'm using the java service wrapper on several platforms (windows, solaris and aix). On the aix platform, I get the following error: STATUS | wrapper | 2005/06/14 11:37:29 | --> Wrapper Started as Daemon STATUS | wrapper | 2005/06/14 11:37:29 | Launching a JVM... Seems like the native library is corrupt in some way ? I'm using v3.1.2 (as far as I know that's the most recent version) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Thanks for your answers. I think i will copy the java.exe. But it's not the best solution. It would be a large improvement if there is only one process per service (the name of the wrapper.exe). With Java Service Launcher(http://www.roeschter.com/) it is possible. mfg Carsten Leif Mortenson schrieb: > Carsten, > Another option is to add the following: > wrapper.pidfile=./wrapper.pid > wrapper.java.pidfile=./java.pid > > That will cause pid files to be created for each process. Carsten,
Another option is to add the following:
wrapper.pidfile=./wrapper.pid
wrapper.java.pidfile=./java.pid
That will cause pid files to be created for each process. You can
then use those ids
to look up the processes in the task manager (Windows) or process list.
Renaming the exes is also a trick I have used a few times.
Cheers,
Leif

Ralph, I can't rule anything out at this point, but the error is that the java.exe is not able to load the jvm.dll for some reason. The first several times it works, so it can't be a file permissions problem. That leaves a handle problem. All sockets, files, etc require handles to be opened on Windows. Not sure why that would be much different if you are using the Wrapper vs not. The Wrapper process uses far fewer handles than the java processes. ??? I'll give this some thought. Hi Leif, even when the 100 JVMs are launched as child processes from a single JVM via Runtime.exec, I encounter no problems. Could it be that the pings of the JVM by the wrappers are problematic when starting more and more wrappers? Just a guess ... Hello Leif, thank you again. Good point, in my test I launched 100 JVMs each from their own console, whereas in our application the service wrappers, and therefore the service JVMs are started as child processes of a single JVM. I'll write a test to mimic this behaviour. Ralph, were those 100 JVMs each launched from their own console or were they all launched as child processes of a single JVM like you are trying to do with your real applications? I have never tried exactly what you are trying. It sounds like a resource issue of some kind. A single JVM uses quite a few file handles. I am wondering if the parent Wrapper process is simply running out? I can't think of anything about the Wrapper itself which would be causing this directly... Hello Leif, thank you very much for your answer. I turned on wrapper.debug=true and generated the output shown below, i.e. the JVM exits with code 6 (SIGABRT, afaik) In a test run, I started more than a hundred JVMs (each starting my Java service) on my PC without any problems. Actually, I want to do something similar - I want to be alerted when there is an OutOfMemory error (ie use the stdout pattern detection) rather than restart the VM. What would be nice would be to have some kind of "Appender" mechanism (you would want to be able to use the log4j appenders) where internal Java Service Wrapper events are logged..... -Nick Internet T.K...@ik...@lists.sourceforge.net - 06/06/2005 10:12 Please respond to wra...@li... Hi Thomas
I think you could easily do this by choosing the third implementation
method; you could even either react on shutdowns triggered by your own
application (from the java side) or by the native service wrapper (by
catching CTRL events). I guess, you would do it in the controlEvent()
method:
public void controlEvent(int event)
{
if (WrapperManager.isControlledByNativeWrapper())
{
// The Wrapper will take care of this event
}
else
{

Hi! I need to run two Java applications simulatneously using a single = wrapper , How Can I achieve this , I tried by adding extra application = parameter to wrapper.conf file , but that didn't work. Does Wrapper = service support this feature , If yes then how can i achieve this,=20 Thanks a lot=20 Vandana Gautam, |

Hello all, can the Java Wrapper generate an e-mail and send it to a certain adress = in case my program shuts down irregular? Or would I have to extend the = Java Wrapper by this functionality by myself? Thanks in advance, Thomas |

Ralph,
Could you try turning on wrapper.debug=true in the those child
processes? From
the log, it looks like the Wrapper is successfully launching the JVM
process. But that
Java process is having a hard time loading its jvm.dll. That is just
about the first thing
the Java executable does so this is a pretty low level problem.
I can't think of anything that the Wrapper would be doing that would
affect this.
The Wrapper does open a socket to communicate with the JVM, but that
does not
look like the problem. Unless you specify different port values, the
Wrapper will
default to using a port in the range 32000-32999. If those are all full
then you would
get an error, but you are not seeing that. Turning on debug output will
show the port
that is being used.
Out of curiosity, have you tried running all of those JVMs without
the Wrapper?
Cheers,
Leif

Hi, thank you very much for your answer. Ports could be a problem, if the wrapper uses them, but 1. I did not find any clue which points to a port problem 2. ports should not be a problem, because we do not need more than a hundred Cheers Ralph wra...@li... schrieb am 03.06.05 16:35:08: > > I believe that the wrapper uses a port to communicate with the JVM. > Maybe you are running out of ports? > > I'm sure Leif will weigh in with a much more informed answer, but this > might be something to look at. > > Ralph Schreyer wrote: > > >Hello, > > > >we use the Java Service Wrapper to put a Java Process under the control of a Windows Service. I believe that the wrapper uses a port to communicate with the JVM. Maybe you are running out of ports? I'm sure Leif will weigh in with a much more informed answer, but this might be something to look at. Hello, we use the Java Service Wrapper to put a Java Process under the control of a Windows Service. This Java Process in turn controls up to, say, 100 tiny Java Proxies, where each is wrapped in its own Java Service Wrapper. In other words: E.g. after a reboot of the machine, one Windows Service starts the Java Service wrapper which starts the main Java Process, which in turn starts up to 100 Java Service Wrappers which again start their tiny Java Proxies. Now, the problem is that after the startup of some 20 or 30 Java Service Wrappers we obtain error messages shown below and no more wrappers can start. CPU or memory are not problematic. Any ideas? Thank you very much and best regards Ralph --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- STATUS | wrapper | 2005/06/02 16:43:10 | --> Wrapper Started as Console STATUS | wrapper | 2005/06/02 16:43:10 | Launching a JVM... You cant change a jar's contents - you can only create a new jar - and in
any case the file lock will prevent you.
George,
What you are wanting to do here is "hot deployment" like most application
servers / servlet engines have...
If you can use an appserver/servlet engine, then maybe you want to have a
look at:
1) JNLP - Its what is used for Java Web Start - but it you can use the JNLP
framework to do updates for anything.. server included.
2) OSGI

Maybe leave the jar as it is, but change its contents?
Like changing the chair that you (the java app) are sitting on..
You may get classloader problems if you do such a thing.

I am trying to get my app working cross-platform, I have it already
working great on Win32.
=20
I have tried to make a single conf file, multiple wrapper binaries for
each platform (win32, solaris, aix) (see the tree below).
=20
Apparentely, it seems on solaris, despite my best efforts in setting the
classpath, WrapperSimpleApp cannot find my app. Running the command
manually in java on the command line works fine.
=20
So, to me, since the classpath is correct, I have no idea why
WrapperSimpleApp can't find my app

See tree below, config, and debug output from win32, solaris:
