Hello again,
I have managed to get my App to start up and run under the Java Service
Wrapper. It starts up very nicely, and I can see that it is running: it
outputs to a log file and provides HTTP access to its internal "console".
However, after 30 seconds the Java wrapper decides that it is not
responding to pings and forcibly terminates it. I have tried setting
wrapper.request_thread_dump_on_failed_jvm_exit=TRUE to see whether any
threads are tangled inside the system, but unfortunately there are too
many threads running and the thread dump has not completed before the
Wrapper terminates the JVM, cutting the thread dump off in mid flow.
During the 30 seconds that the App is not responding to pings, CPU load
settles down to 0 about 5 seconds after startup is completed, so that I
know the ping is not being locked out by CPU overload.
Can anybody suggest where I should look for the missing ping?
Log from a single failed run is listed below.

The problem appears to be with the use of the -Djava.endorsed.dirs switch in the Wrapper configuration file. When I took this out and expanded the jars into the classpath, my application was then able to load the dll quite happily. (Another problem follows, which I will post about separately). Alec Cawley |

Dear Nicki,
Thanks for the answer. I will try the wrapper.java.pidfile parameter =
(already tested) and will implement an sleep for an few seconds so that =
it should work.
Many thanks for your help.

Luis,
What is the error that you are seeing while stopping the service? =20
The "net stop app"
command will time out if the app takes a while to shutdown.
If you use "wrapper -p wrapper.conf" to stop the service, you will not =
have this problem.
You mentioned the pid. You can actually do this under windows, it =
is just not on by
default. Take a look at the wrapper.pidfile and wrapper.java.pidfile=20
properties. The
later will give you a pid file for the actual JVM.
Version 3.2.0 will contain several new ways to test the status of a =
service and also includes several new status files.
Cheers,
Leif

Hello, Wrapper users, [Duplicate because I sent the first copy from the wrong address - moderator please discard first copy] I am having trouble running my application under the Wrapper because it is unable to load the wrapper.dll. As you can see from the console log below, the Wrapper code can "see" the dll, but the system gives an UnsatisfiedLinkError. As you can see at the foot of the log, a dir command using the path cut-and-pasted from the error message says that the DLL is there. I have reloaded the wrapper.dll from the unzipped issue kit a couple of times, and viewed it with the Microsoft Dependency Walker to see if it is corrupted, and it does not appear to be. I have run the WrapperTest from the distribution directory and it works fine. Hello, Wrapper users, I am having trouble running my application under the Wrapper because it is unable to load the wrapper.dll. My application still will not run even when I set its library search to point to the copy of the dll being used by TestWtqapper i.e. wrapper.java.library.path.1=3DC:\Wrapper\wrapper_win32_3.1.2\lib I know this problem has come up before on the list, but I did not see any resolution posted. We remotely restart some of our agents with a System.exit. This causes the wrapper to restart the JVM. However, it will not re-read the conf files and start the JVM with any new properties. Is there a way to force the wrapper to re-read the conf files without having to restart the wrapper itself? =20 R. |

Luis,
What is the error that you are seeing while stopping the service?
The "net stop app"
command will time out if the app takes a while to shutdown.
If you use "wrapper -p wrapper.conf" to stop the service, you will not
have this problem.
You mentioned the pid. You can actually do this under windows, it
is just not on by
default. Take a look at the wrapper.pidfile and wrapper.java.pidfile
properties. The
later will give you a pid file for the actual JVM.
Version 3.2.0 will contain several new ways to test the status of a
service and also
includes several new status files.
Cheers,
Leif

Luis,
I am not completely clear about what is happening. It sounds like
your live update
application is attempting to stop the Wrapper as a service, update some
files and then
quickly restart it. Is that correct?
When you attempt to restart the service, you are then getting an
error that the service
is still being stopped. My guess here is that this is not a wrapper a
problem but rather
a problem with your live update tool. It doesn't sound like it is
correctly waiting for the
service to stop before continuing.
Let me know if I am misunderstanding something.
Cheers,
Leif

Peter,
Thanks for pointing this out. It is a problem that I have already
fixed. It has been in
CVS for a few months and will be in the 3.2.0 release. There are
actually a few ways
to do this in the new version.
One option for now is to set the password in an environment
variable. Then place
the following in your wrapper.conf file
wrapper.ntservice.password=%PASSWORD%
The script that runs the Wrapper to install the service would set this
environment variable
for the current environment but it would not be there later on when the
service is actually
run.
Another option is to create a temporary file password.conf
containing the password
property. Then include that from the wrapper.conf file:
#include ../conf/password.conf
Once the service has been installed, the file can be deleted.
Cheers,
Leif

Hi , I'm new to this tool and I have the following security issue. When I install the service , I specify Windows account name and password, and then this info is available in the service properties in the field 'Path to executable' , like D:\Server\build\service\Wrapper.exe -s D:\Server\build\service\conf\wrapper.conf "wrapper.ntservice.name=3DReportServer" " wrapper.ntservice.displayname=3DReport Server" " wrapper.ntservice.description=3DReport Server" wrapper.ntservice.account=3Ddom01\ReportAdmin wrapper.ntservice.password=3DReportPass wrapper.app.parameter.5=3D_run_rser= ver wrapper.app.parameter.11=3D_shutdown_rserver The issue that command line argument ' wrapper.ntservice.password=3DReportPass' is stored to this field. Keeping the account name and password in non-encrypted way in the configuration file doesn't work for me as well. Is there any way to hide the password ? -- ---------------------------------------------------- Peter Fen pe...@gm... |

Dear Ladies and Gentleman, We are using the java service wrapper to stop and start our java = application.=20 In some cases we have problems stopping our application which causes the = wrapper to fail with an error message however the application is stopped = also. Normally this is not an big problem if we restart our application = but it is if we restart the application using our liveupdate = functionality. In this case the Liveupdate (a process which stops the = application, updates the system and restart the application) is finished = to fast and while trying to start the wrapper we receive the error = message "The ipex scheduler service service is already running with = status: STOP_PENDING" and the application is not started. I would like to ask you if you have had this problem and how has it been = solved and if not maybe you know an parameter which can be set and which = slows down the start of the application. Hi Nick, I managed to reslove the issue. I am running Tomcat 5 and I had included the bin directory in the java.endorsed.dirs system property. I removed this and ran it again. Hi Leif, Fair point about the docs. I prob should have included the command that tomcat issues when running normally via the startup.bat script. For startup it is using: start "Tomcat" "C:\j2sdk1.4.2_02\\bin\java" -Daxis.EngineConfigFactory=com.fiorano.bc.axis.configuration.FioranoEngineConfigurationFactoryServlet -DFIORANO_HOME=..\..\.. -DFMQ_DIR=..\..\..\fmq -DBC_REPOSITORY=..\..\..\esb\fes\repository\components -Djava.naming.factory.initial=org.apache.naming.java.javaURLContextFactory -Djava.naming.factory.url.pkgs=org.apache.naming -Djava.util.logging.config.file=./logging.properties -Djava.endorsed.dirs="C:\Program Files\Fiorano\FioranoSOA2006\extlib\tomcat\common\endorsed" -classpath "C:\j2sdk1.4.2_02\\lib\tools.jar;C:\Program Files\Fiorano\FioranoSOA2006\extlib\tomcat\bin\bootstrap.jar" -Dcatalina.base="C:\Program Files\Fiorano\FioranoSOA2006\extlib\tomcat" -Dcatalina.home="C:\Program Files\Fiorano\FioranoSOA2006\extlib\tomcat" -Djava.io.tmpdir="C:\Program Files\Fiorano\FioranoSOA2006\extlib\tomcat\temp" org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap start And for shutdown it is using: "C:\j2sdk1.4.2_02\\bin\java" #-Daxis.EngineConfigFactory=com.fiorano.bc.axis.configuration.FioranoEngineConfigurationFactoryServlet -DFIORANO_HOME=..\..\.. -DFMQ_DIR=..\..\..\fmq -DBC_REPOSITORY=..\..\..\esb\fes\repository\components -Djava.naming.factory.initial=org.apache.naming.java.javaURLContextFactory -Djava.naming.factory.url.pkgs=org.apache.naming -Djava.util.logging.config.file=./logging.properties -Djava.endorsed.dirs="C:\Program Files\Fiorano\FioranoSOA2006\extlib\tomcat\common\endorsed" -classpath "C:\j2sdk1.4.2_02\\lib\tools.jar;C:\Program Files\Fiorano\FioranoSOA2006\extlib\tomcat\bin\bootstrap.jar" -Dcatalina.base="C:\Program Files\Fiorano\FioranoSOA2006\extlib\tomcat" -Dcatalina.home="C:\Program Files\Fiorano\FioranoSOA2006\extlib\tomcat" -Djava.io.tmpdir="C:\Program Files\Fiorano\FioranoSOA2006\extlib\tomcat\temp" org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap stop Thanks, Adrian. I'm going to attempt cross-compiling the source code on Windows XP, SP2
to produce an executable and dll on AMD64 that I can use with a 64-bit
JVM. I'm trying first to compile it for just Win32 but I'm stuck.
------ Build started: Project: Wrapper, Configuration: Release Win32

Compiling...
wrapper_win.c
wrapper_win.c(2593) : error C2061: syntax error : identifier 'main'
wrapper_win.c(2593) : error C2059: syntax error : ';'

Build log was saved at "file://c:\Documents and

\BuildLog.htm"
Wrapper - 3 error(s), 0 warning(s)
---------------------- Done ----------------------
Build: 0 succeeded, 1 failed, 0 skipped
It doesn't like:
** SNIP **
void _CRTAPI1 main(int argc, char **argv) {
int result =3D 0;
int i;=20
** END SNIP **
Any ideas?
I'm using Visual Studio .Net 2003

I would like to use the wrapper as a service, but am having problems. My java app depends upon a script that sets up a very specfic environment (varibales etc) and I need that environment to be available to my java app via the wrapper. Is there a way to do this? I see you can use the set. notation to include them in the conf file, but I cannot see a graceful way to do the transalation from the environment to the conf file, as there are alot of them (environment varaibles) being set in the setup script, and this script is not under my control. Thanks in advance, Eric |

Floor,
From your original message, my guess is that you are not configuring the
Wrapper correctly. What does your full configuration file look like.
Your main class should be WrapperSimpleApp, WrapperStartStopApp,
or a custom class which implements the WrapperListener method.
If not, then you will get the message that you were seeing.
While it is true that setting a startup timeout of 5000 seconds will
probably
make your application appear to work, the Wrapper will still give up and
exit after 5000 seconds. You have hidden the problem but not made it go
away. Doing this also effectively disables the error detection and
correction
features of the Wrapper.
Cheers,
Leif

Raj,
Another user saw something like this in June. The mail was titled:
"Problems while starting multiple wrappers". I had tested 40 JVMs on
my own system without any problems and never came up with a solution
to the problem...
For some reason, the Java.exe process is not able to load the jvm.dll
file. There is nothing about the Wrapper that I can think of which could
be causing this. What version of Windows are you using? Home,
Professional, or Server edition? My tests had been on a XP Pro system
with a simple Java app. I would run into memory issues running that
many Tomcats on my system.
When your 18th JVM fails, what happens if you try to launch that
instance of Tomcat without the Wrapper?
Are you running all 18 instances as services? What happens if you
run then in console windows. My thought is that there may be some
limitations on handles for a single user?? By default, all services are
run as the SYSTEM user.
Anyone else have any ideas?
Cheers,
Leif

I need to figure out a way to make the docs a bit clearer. Those
docs are not meant
to be a fixed configuration for all Tomcat versions. It is simply a
walk through of the
"Process" for coming up with a configuration.
The problem that you are having is because the version of Tomcat
that you are using
requires a different command line than that shown in the example.
There is most likely
one or more missing system properties in the command line.
This would be much simpler if Tomcat included a wrapper.conf file in
their
distribution as Jetty does. :-)
Cheers,
Leif

Ouch.
it looks like this is the line (in clogging) throwing an NPE
logInterface =
this.getClass().getClassLoader().loadClass(LOG_INTERFACE);
getClassloader can return null if this class is loaded by the bootstrap
classloader
What JVM are you using?
Is wrapper using the same JRE as you are running tomcat standalone?
Is there anything in your JRE lib/ext?

Subject: [Wrapper-user] Configuring Tomcat with wapper
Hi,
I am trying to configure tomcat to run as a Windows Service using
wrapper. I have followed the instructions from the wrapper site which
even uses tomcat as an example on how to set-up a service using the
WrapperStartStopApp class. See:
http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.org/doc/english/integrate-start-stop-win.html
However when I try to run Tomcat.bat to test it deploys OK before
installing it as a service I get an exception and I cannot figure out
what the problem is. I have attached the wrapper log file and the conf
file. If anyone can help shed some light on this it would be greatly
appriciated.
Thanks in advance,
Adrian.
