Hi, I was wondering if anyone was making a delta pack for 3.2.1? If it's just a matter of getting the latest binaries and renaming some of the wrapper files like in the last delta pack, I'm happy to do that and upload it to someone. Ashleigh Gordon |

I am running a Java application as service using Method 2. I am able to start and stop the program using the Console (i.e. using the startup script App.bat). The service installs fine and it starts fine. But, when I try to stop it, it shuts down internally but it gives me the following error: "Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly." But actually, it shuts down properly. STATUS | wrapper | 2006/07/17 11:59:42 | --> Wrapper Started as Service STATUS | wrapper | 2006/07/17 11:59:42 | Launching a JVM... Yeah, I saw that (dialog size) and forgot to include it in the bugs
section.<br>
<br>
I was planning on using Tabs for the separation of the different
parts, and I believe that having a restart button would certainly be a
good option. Tracking changed and unchanged properties (and
identifying those which can and can't be used with a "Restart") would
simply be another field to be tracked by the Setting.class.<br>
Documentation would not be difficult to include--that's a good
point. I'll get cracking on it. I'm already using Swing, so that's
not difficult.<br>
I'll collect any other ideas and try to get another version out in
the next week or so.<br>
<br>
Errr...I assume that it's actually functioning correctly for
everyone out there? Looks are fine, but if it doesn't perform it's
basic task, it's still broken.<br>

On my system when I attempt to add a property, I get a dialog which
only shows me a
comment field. If I manually resize the dialog then I figured out that
a property name and
value is also available. You need to change the default dialog size.
Ideas:
One thing that you could easily do with Java is to have a simple
help dialog for each
property. If you are using Swing, you can show HTML content in a
label. Maybe add
property documentation by simply loading the content of the property's
documention
from the wrapper web site. You could probably even do some simple
manipulation of
the HTML to strip out the menus etc to get the simple content text. If
you want to play
with your own style sheets, you could also build local documentation
based on the
documention source files in the wrapper source distributions.
To make this really useful, it would be nice to have things set up
in such a way as to help
users discover what is available when configuring the wrapper. Rather
than a structured
editor, maybe set it up as a Windows style tab dialog. Tabs would be
"JVM configuration",
"Classpath", "Application Configuration", "Logging", etc.
The users would not have to necessarily see the actual properties.
If you automatically add the wrapper.commandfile and
wrapper.restart.reload_configuration
properties, you could do things like restarting the wrapper to update
its configuration all
from within your tool. Note that not all properties are reloadable.
A great configuration tool would be a good addition to the Wrapper.
I am looking
forward to seeing where you take this.
Cheers,
Leif

I've placed the Jar file on my company site (please excuse the

<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://www.tdcs.cc/apps/jswconf/JSWConf.jar">http://www.tdcs.cc/apps/jswconf/JSWConf.jar</a> (for some reason,
capitalization is important when specifying the file)
My hosting service is reluctant to add the mime-type for Java Web
Start, but you can download the JNLP file and get any updates using
the following:
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://www.tdcs.cc/apps/JSWConf.jnlp">http://www.tdcs.cc/apps/JSWConf.jnlp</a> (again, caps seem to be
important to the hosting service)
Running: Either use the jnlp file or enter "java -jar
JSWConf.jar" That's it!
Usage:
* Select the file using the "Load" button
* The list of configuration properties is in the lower window:
Green indicates enabled files, Red indicates disables (commented
out)
* Select a property and the property, value, state
(enabled/disabled), and comments will be displayed in the top panel.
* Changes made are instantaneous
* "Add" places the new property below the currently selected one.
* "Remove" deletes the currently selected property.
* If you want to go back to the originally loaded configuration,
select "Reload"
* Click "Save" and the file will be written back to the same place
you loaded it from.
* Empty property settings (anything with a blank before the "=")
are dropped when writing the output.
Bugs/Shortcomings/"Gee, I'd like it to do this..."/Next version
(or so)
* Everything has to be manually entered: No auto fill of jars, no
file selection (yet), no automatic use of environment settings
* No pre-select list of properties (simple enough to do, probably
in the next version)
* Needs to split up the properties into their relevant sections
(JVM, Application Params, Service config, etc)
* No GPL Notice within the application yet, but I'm going on
record as saying that anyone who wants to grab it, mod it, and
use it in accordance with the GPL has my blessing.
* Even an unmodded wrapper.conf file looks slightly different
("diff original-wrapper.conf saved-wrapper.conf" makes it seem
as if nothing is the same), but appears to follow the observable
conventions of the sample wrapper.conf. This is basically a
reverse-engineer job--if anyone can direct me to the
documentation for the "standard" I'll try to make it compliant
to the letter.
I've had the IO function repeatedly crunch through a file 100
times (load and unload) and the output is consistent. If anyone has
any weirdness show up, please let me know. I've tried hard to stamp
out unwanted padding and such, but I may have missed something.
As always, feel free to pass on criticisms, complaints, faint
praise, left-handed compliments, and cash bribes. :-)
Hope this helps.

David,
Sounds great. It sounds like you want to manage it yourself and
maintain ownership
so the GPL is fine. This would be a standalone tool, so I don't think
that would place
any restrictions on anyone.
Things to keep in mind:
1) Include files (Nested).
2) Environment Variables.
3) Maybe warn users about environment variable references so they know
those variables
must be system wide to work when running as a service under the system user.
Cheers,
Leif

setup is straightforward, and I believe that if you understand *NIX-type
services, it comes very easy.
However, I have to send my work to a network administrator who is
more comfortable in an MS-only environment. While not trying to step on
his toes, I have to explain very carefully where to place the
pre-configured files and wrapper.conf file without sounding pushy.
I was wondering if anyone has worked on a configuration GUI to
handle the wrapper.conf file? I have created an application for
configuring for the smb.conf file while keeping all comments intact, and
I thought that there might be an interest in doing the same thing for
the wrapper.conf file.
(As an aside, I understand that there are plenty of other SAMBA

they require the installation of another service with all the associated

I have started on the basics, and should have a running example in
about a week. If there is enough interest, I'd be glad to submit it
either as an included part of the service wrapper or a separate jar
executable. (That way, the user could simply enter "java -jar
JSWConfig.jar" and go to work.)
I'm open to any comments, suggestions, heckling, or

this is worth pursuing for the good of everyone or just something I'll
keep in my own toolbox.

Eric,
Does your service take a while to stop? The Windows NET command
has a very
short timeout. That is what led me to create the stop command for the
wrapper.
It will wait as long it takes. Run "wrapper.exe -?" for more info. Let
me know if
this fixes it for you.
If not, run with wrapper.debug=true and see what is happening in the
log file.
Cheers,
Leif

Gene,
I am not a big mac user myself. Do any other OSX users have any
suggestions here?
What does your wrapper.log look like? Try running with
wrapper.debug=true. As
the wrapper quits, something is happening... If you leave the window
open, is the
wrapper/jvm running?
Cheers,
Leif

Scott,
I do not have access to a system to build the 32-bit ppc linux
binaries. Thus it was not
included. You should be able to build it fairly easily from source by
creating the
appropriate makefile however.
The wrapper will work without that binary, but as the message says,
several features
will be disabled. You will be much happier with the wrapper if you can
build the
32-bit native library. If you get it working, please send me the
resulting makefile
so I can add it to the distribution for future releases.
To build, download the wrapper_prerelease_3.2.1.tar.gz file. Then
in the src/c
directory, copy Makefile-linux-ppc-64 to Makefile-linux-ppc-32. Open
the file
in an editor that will NOT change tabs to spaces. Then remove the -m64
from the
first line. You should now be able to run "./build32.sh release" in
the distribution
root directory. The makefile may need other changes?
Post back if you have any problems.
Cheers,
Leif

Well, obviously you need to put one of those two files in the given folder ( /home/u0002080/). The files should be included somewhere in the download I reckon. I have a question about the execution of the wrapper in a Red Hat Linux environment when running with a 32-bit JRE. I get the following error messages at the initialization of the wrapper and my application: jvm 1 | WARNING - Unable to load the Wrapper's native library because none of the jvm 1 | following files: jvm 1 | libwrapper-linux-ppc-32.so jvm 1 | libwrapper.so jvm 1 | could be located on the following java.library.path: jvm 1 | /home/u0002080/.\ jvm 1 | Please see the documentation for the wrapper.java.library.path jvm 1 | configuration property. jvm 1 | System signals will not be handled correctly. I'm running the service wrapper using mac osx server 10.4.7 and when it boots a blank window appears with the title "org.tanukisoftware.wrapper.WrapperSimpleApp" even before logging in. I'm using the same configuration with a different java Main and this doesn't happen. If the window is closed than the wrapper quits which obviously is not good. Would the existence of swing/awt references in the code cause this to occur even if they were never executed? thanks Eugene Hart |

I looked thru the archives and saw where this was reported but never saw a response that something was fixed. The service is being stopped but an error seems to be returned to net. The only interesting thing I see in the logs is that my process goes away and I see a Status from wrapper 8 seconds later that Wrapper is stopped. Any ideas of what is causing this? Eric |

Hello.
I've started using Java ServiceWrapper for deployment on my
development projects for Windows servers, and I am very impressed. The
setup is straightforward, and I believe that if you understand *NIX-type
services, it comes very easy.
(As an aside, I understand that there are plenty of other SAMBA
configuration apps out there (Webmin and SWAT are pretty obvious) but
they require the installation of another service with all the associated
overhead and security concerns. I wanted to have a simple,
straight-forward app that would not require any outside support and run
on any client. While rough looking, it pretty much achieved my goals.)
I have started on the basics, and should have a running example in
about a week. If there is enough interest, I'd be glad to submit it
either as an included part of the service wrapper or a separate jar
executable. (That way, the user could simply enter "java -jar
JSWConfig.jar" and go to work.)
I'm open to any comments, suggestions, heckling, or
name-calling--I've got tough skin, and I'd like to get a good idea if
this is worth pursuing for the good of everyone or just something I'll
keep in my own toolbox.

Martyn,
This is mentioned several times in the archives. Always a good
place to start. :-)
This is actually a feature of Windows. By default, services run as
a the SYSTEM
user. That user does not have access to any network drives. Your
console account
has all of its network drives set up. That is what you want to be
running as. See the
wrapper.ntservice.account property documentation for details. Be sure
to read the
part about how to activate the ability to run as a service for your account.
Cheers,
Leif

Hi Leif,
I changed the call to listen() to the 3.1.2 way. Then it worked! The VM
and the wrapper were able to see each other again. What I do not know is
the impact of this change. Do you have any idea?

Phillip

Hi Leif,
With 3.2.1 I was able to build the binaries without using gcc, but using
cc. The makefile works like a charm.
The problem however still exists. For some reason the JVM indeed cannot
connect to the port 32000. I trying from the commandline via 'telnet
localhost 32000'. I get a connection timeout as well. This does mean
that it can connect to the designated port. Because when the wrapper is
not running you get a 'connection refused'.
So for some reason the wrapper does not accept the connection. I took a
look at the acceptance code for 3.1.2 and for 3.2.1 to see the
difference. Like I said, my knowledge of C is pretty minimal.
The differences that I could see that might explain this behavior:
3.1.2 (old):
/* Tell the socket to start listening. */
rc =3D listen(ssd, 1);
3.2.1 (new):
/* Tell the socket to start listening. */
rc =3D listen(ssd, 0);
I don't know the impact of this change for the OSF1.
I'll see if I can do some changes to see if it impacts anything.
Other people's help is of course highly appreciated :)
Regards,
Phillip

Subject: Re: [Wrapper-user] Trying to build on Tru64 5.1B
Phillip,
From the log, it looks like the native library is working fine. =20
The problem is that the
socket opened from the JVM to the native wrapper component does not seem
to be
connecting. I am not sure why that would be.
The wrapper is listening on port 32000, and Java is attempting to=20
connect to that
port. But normally there should be some log output from the wrapper=20
process that
the connection was accepted. That is not happening.
You should be seeing something like this:
jvm 1 | Open socket to wrapper...Wrapper-Connection
jvm 1 | Opened Socket from 31000 to 32000
jvm 1 | Send a packet KEY : C7PxaOmzZfw_DkAV
jvm 1 |=20
handleSocket(Socket[addr=3Dlocalhost/127.0.0.1,port=3D32000,localport=3D310=
00]
)
wrapperp | accepted a socket from 127.0.0.1 on port 31000
wrapperp | read a packet KEY : C7PxaOmzZfw_DkAV
wrapper | Got key from JVM: C7PxaOmzZfw_DkAV
The attempt to open the socket from Java is not failing, it is=20
simply never returning.
Ie it is blocking for some reason.
Unfortunately, I don't have access to an OSF system to help out. I=20
will try to
answer any questions that you encounter however.
As for the makefile. It looks like the 3.2.0 release had tabs=20
converted to spaces
for that make file. Sorry about that. It has been fixed for the 3.2.1=20
release. Could
you give that a try?
Cheers,
Leif

Hi Leif,
With 3.2.1 I was able to build the binaries without using gcc, but using
rc =3D listen(ssd, 1);
3.2.1 (new):
/* Tell the socket to start listening. */
rc =3D listen(ssd, 0);

00]
)
wrapperp | accepted a socket from 127.0.0.1 on port 31000
wrapperp | read a packet KEY : C7PxaOmzZfw_DkAV
wrapper | Got key from JVM: C7PxaOmzZfw_DkAV
The attempt to open the socket from Java is not failing, it is=20
simply never returning.
Ie it is blocking for some reason.
Unfortunately, I don't have access to an OSF system to help out. I=20
will try to
answer any questions that you encounter however.
As for the makefile. It looks like the 3.2.0 release had tabs=20
converted to spaces
for that make file. Sorry about that. It has been fixed for the 3.2.1=20
release. Could
you give that a try?
Cheers,
Leif
