Adding and removing file extensions in Windows Vista

Some sample pictures available with Windows Vista contain no file extension. Wallpaper Changer can use these, initially; however, if a file extension is added to the filename and then removed, the picture will no longer be used.
This is because Wallpaper Changer searches the selected directories for certain file extensions (.jpg, .png, .gif, etc). For some reason, if left alone, Vista's sample pictures are found and used. But if tampered with (adding then removing a file extension) the pictures will not be used anymore due to the subsequent absence of a file extension.
I have not yet found a solution to this problem and it most likely won't be solved anytime soon.
