#40 background jobs? security hole?

What happens when a foreground job runs a long process using &? Does it get killed when I kill the process group after 3 minutes? Is it possible to make sure it will get killed? What about the double-& trick? I think that prevents accumulation of zombie processes and doesn't make any difference to this question.

At some point I need to carve out a little time to sort this out.
