#352 add "test project" for post-update debugging

It would be convenient to have a simple built-in "test" project that could be checked after tweaking configuration or upgrading software to see if anything has been broken. The project could have a collection of latex and other files, each testing a different thing that might break, such as:
1. converting image formats
2. making and including bibliographies
3. running scripts (of various kinds) to produce output
4. ... ?
Then, I suppose, post-upgrade, one would 'clear working directory' and remake everything.

Or, perhaps this exists already?
