There was a time when I feared that it would interact badly with source files that contain a lot of dollar signs. But now WW knows not to look for these constructions within source-files, so maybe it would be all right.

Seems like it could be worked around, either by adding line breaks, which don't affect wikitext but would stop the WW interpretation, or by using \$ maybe.
It might need some kind of change to how the output looks, so that people would be easily able to tell that WW has taken control of their $ signs.

I think, though, that the current formatting consequences of a rogue $ pair - changing the text from roman sans-serif font into serif math italics with possibly some very odd looking math typesetting - would probably be enough for people to get what happened.
