#2 editable cells not editable

when I use the editable files from the example they work.

I can also load them into excel, edit, save, they still work.

When I make a new .xls file, no cell becomes editable (trivial things like EditMode done right).

Tried:

1) make new simple sheet, proceeding as described: allow for range editing and then protect sheet: won't work, nothing is editable
2) create simple but fully unprotected sheet: nothing is editable

no error messages, sheet does render, no editing capability...

any hints, maybe a shard of documentation.....
