I am new to WSDL so I hope my problem has a simple answer. Everything works well on my PC and I now wish to upload the data to my web site.
I entered the details in the Options/FTP window. Leaving out the ftp address and pressing "test", all works very well. However, as soon as I add my ftp address and press "test" I get error message after error message.
In the latest try I entered the full address and gave the file name of the output file, having first uploaded it to the server. This took some time before the error message appeared so I seem to be getting a little further. The error message was 425.
Can someone please suggest anything I can try to correct this?
One other little question. Is it possible to reset the rain data each month, please?
Did you fill in User ID, Password and URL? To start with you should leave "Use SSL" un-checked. Also, try checking "Passive FTP" if it still does not work.
The URL should look something like this in terms of format (your content will obviously be different):
There needs to be a directory path after the server's URL in almost all cases.
Have you read the user manual section about FTP? It covers a lot of the issues people sometimes run into with FTP.
If you still can't get it working then please post back here a screen capture of the options window showing all of the FTP settings you have made. You should blank out the password (unless it is just the ****'s) and obfuscate the actual ftp server url for your privacy.
I just remembered that you cannot post images here. If you make a screen capture, can you post it on your web site and give us a link to it?
Hi aweatherguy, thanks for your reply.
I cannot find a passive ftp option (cannot find it in the manual, either) so I don't know how to check it, I'm afraid.
I think I have the right path but I have posted a screen capture of the options window and the error message here:
Yes, I have read the user manual (very good it is, too) but cannot see a resolution to my problem. A google suggests that it is related to ports. I can access the files using ftp in my browser as well as a couple of web page editing tools so, if it is port related, the issue is with WSDL and I cannot find a place to alter the ports from.
By the way, I love the user interface in WDSL; much better than the gaudy commercial offerings. Well done.
There are check boxes for SSL and Passive to the right of the User ID and Password fields. This is on 184.108.40.206-it may not have been on 220.127.116.11, the Current Stable Release, if that's what you're using. If you need passive or SSL, you might want to try the beta version instead.
18.104.22.168 has been very stable for me, so it should be a safe bet.
Thanks for that, yenots. From what I read about error 425, using passive is just putting sticking plaster over the problem rather than solving the problem. However, it is still worth a try.
Yenots is correct, you'll need a newer version of WSDL to have the passive option.
And yes - sometimes a band-aid - but a band-aid for problems with the FTP SERVER, not the client (WSDL). Unless you are administering the server there's probably nothing you can do about the problem other than complain.
Ok, I have downloaded 22.214.171.124 and, yes, passive ftp is there. However, the test button doesn't seem to do anything. There are no messages at all (at least there are no error messages) and the target file is not updated. Also the ftp counter in WSDL is not counting up and is staying at zero. The timer is running and is red. Any ideas, please?
Until you get the test button working, un-check the "Enable" box for FTP uploads and save options that way.
I assume you can successfully FTP from your computer using another client (e.g. ftp command in command window or some other FTP client)? Just so we know there aren't some firewall issues or something. I use the free version of Comodo firewall and it blocks ftp so I have to remember to turn it off before trying ftp.
Once you have turned off the Enable on FTP, restart WSDL to make sure that no upload threads are hung up or anything. Try the test button again. The image you posted looks okay to me.
If you are not seeing the target file get updated there is some other problem. That happens before any ftp operations are attempted, so if that isn't happening, something else is wrong.
I just tested FTP with the current version of WSDL and it works with my FTP server (both passive and non-passive) so I don't think we're looking at a bug in WSDL (at least not yet, anyway).
I have now turned off the enable on FTP and re-started WSDL. Clicking on the test button still gets no response and the target file is not being updated. It still has the timestamp frpm yesterday when I was using the earlier version of WSDL.
I can definitely FTP from my computer. To test this, I have manually uploaded the target file (TEST.htm) which can be viewed here: http://www.hneil.plus.com/TEST.htm
Could a problem have arisen in updating the file? Would it be better if I clear the WSDL folder and start again?
Another thought, should I perhaps try a version other than 126.96.36.199? If so, which one would be best?
I would recomend a "clean install". I have had problems in the past that could not be solved any other way, but I'm not one to go looking for where or why (no patients) I just delete everything and start over. First I would close the current version and run the install and select "Remove" NOT "Repair", "Remove"!
2. Go to C:\ Pogram Files and see if it removed the "Weather" folder sometimes it has not been removed. Delete it & all.
3. Go to C:\ Docs & Setts/"user-name"/Local Settings/ Application Data/WMRx00/WxLogger.exe StrongName….gobbalyGook…/ this is where you find past version folders. The one you just uninstalled may still be there.
4. I recomend deleting all of them. The new version will re-create it. The last version you used is fine. Download and re-install 188.8.131.52. You should be asked to agree to the ULA again. You should not be asked to choose to use a previous versions "options". Starting WSDL this time should be a "virgin" version. Check your options again. You'll find that some, if not all, are still set as they were!? That's OK. go through them and then set up FTP again. See if that does it for you.
If the 184.108.40.206 installer is still on your desktop or where-ever you downloaded to the last time, you can use it to re-install WSDL. You don't have to download it again.
Thanks for the suggestions, xafxaf. I will try that now and report back.
It should not matter if you're using 4.2 or the latest beta but it would not hurt to try each one. I've verified that the test button does work in the latest beta version.
Until the target file is being correctly updated, there is not much point in worrying about the FTP operation. To verify that WSDL can find the template file, click on the "Edit" button next to the file path in the options window (you may need the beta version to get the Edit button). If you get a Notepad window looking at the template file, then that part is okay.
Double-check the path to the result file. You might even try changing it to something else just for grins to see if a new file appears. Try deleting any pre-existing result file before hitting the test button.
If you still have trouble, let me know and I'll add a lot more information to the message log during the whole test process and put that into the next beta release.
PEN, If you try what I said it should eliminate your worries about version conflicts. If it does not solve your problem then the problem is not with WSDL, unless you have something NOT set correctly and your just not catching it within WSDL. You should listen to what aweatherguy has to say, he is THE authority on WSDL and FTP. Did you click on the "HELP" and read the "USER MANUAL" maybe there is something you missed in there about FTP? I'm using the 220.127.116.11 version and it appears to be working fine too. I do not have a web site and know nothing about FTP. ONLY how to retsore "things" back to where they were before I messed them up:-)
I have completely removed WSDL and re-installed 18.104.22.168. Before I touched anything else, I tried the test button. Nothing. No response (other than a change in the button highlight). I put in a new target file name but that never appeared.
I have just had an emergency call out to fix a customer's computer problem so will be away for a while. When I get back I will try going back to the non-beta to double check the test button and perhaps try one or two other versions. Just in case it makes a difference, I am running Windows XP Home, SP3.
Sorry, the version above should read 22.214.171.124
I will try 126.96.36.199 when I get back.
Hi, I have now downloaded 188.8.131.52 and it works; all of it. I am very relieved but it looks as of there is a bug in 184.108.40.206 (sorry, aweatherguy).
Anyway, there are still some issues with the display but I have yet to set the options so I suspect (hope) that will cure them. I will let you all know the final result. Thanks for all your help.
A question for aweatherguy:-
Is there any chance of a monthly total in the precipitation window, please?
I don't believe there is a bug in that version. Other people have been using it. You used previous versions first and, like I said, I have run into problems after an upgrade too and that was the only cure.
Is there a demand for "monthly totals" for some reason?? I see you're not the only one to ask about that.
Ok, the first installation (stable version) was fine when using the test button but would not load by ftp to my site. The next version (220.127.116.11) had a problem. I then totally cleared all WSDL files and did a clean install of 18.104.22.168. Problem was still there. I then upgraded to 22.214.171.124. This instantly worked. It may be that the problem relates to my computer configuration as well as WSDL but there is definitely a difference between those versions on my computer. I would call that a bug.
The monthly totals are important to me because that is how most of the weather forums and newsgroups I use actually compare rainfall from region to region and from year to year. That is how I have become used to measuring rainfall. I don't know if it is something that is peculiar to the UK but, as I have a smallholding, it is important for me to be able to assess each month.
Now I have the ftp upload working and the options set, I could do with some advice, before I make it live, re some specific areas, please ( the test url is http://www.hneil.plus.com/TEST.htm):
1. Total rain is shown as 6.4mm. This should be zero (the 6.4 probably comes from tests I did on the new weather station). How do I get this back to zero?
2. "Since" is shown as 1/1/2009. How do I get this to display the same as the window on my computer (which shows 5/6/2011)?
3. The x axis on the graphs on the web site seem to show 1 hour ahead of what they should. Also, the graphs on my computer only show the last 30 minutes. Changing the number of days has no effect.
I realise that this is a beta version and I must expect problems. I am happy to try to play my part in correcting them as I have had such good help on here. Also, it works and that is the main thing.
I have also just noticed that the anemometer graph on my web site shows the wind direction about 180 degrees out. I note that the first version (stable) I tried had this problem and the release notes of 126.96.36.199 showed this problem as being corrected. The graph in my computer window shows the wind direction correctly, it is only the one displaying on the web page that is still wrong.
I have just made an interesting discovery. Re the anemometer graph, the TEST.htm file on my computer shows the graph correctly. The same file from my web site is wrong (wind is shown 180 degrees out) yet all that has happened (as far as I can see) is that the file has been loaded onto my website. This does not make sense so any ideas as to what could be happening, please?
I have NOT experienced any of those problems so I can not help, but I know aweatherguy can. Be patient he is VERY busy. Give him a chance to do some research and he will help you.
Thanks for the reply xafxaf. I am happy to wait. I have already been very impressed by aweatherguy. I'm not sure about time/day differences between us (I assume aweatherguy is in America) but it is Sunday in the UK and he still posted this morning (my morning).
