Unable to install wmlive 13.2 trixie
Please be aware that wmlive is to about 99% composed of original Debian/Trixie packages, and just a fraction of add-on packages is managed by ourselves. If you are experiencing issues with Xorg, then please open a bug report with the Debian Xorg package maintenance team who manage this software. Nvidia is known for not playing well with Linux in general and should therefore be generally avoided. To only use hardware that is known to work well with Linux is the best advice that can be given for aspiring...
Since i am unable to reproduce the claimed errors for the grub installation, there is nothing that can be done from my side. There is no missing firmware after installation is complete. All available Debian firmware packages are already included in the squashfs that is used for the installation to disk. So if there are still firmware related issues after installation, maybe your hardware is simply not yet compatible with the installed system version. Maybe you are better served with another distribution...
Another problem with not having necessary firmware during and after install is inability to adjust display resolution in wmlive Settings menu. But it does work from debian trixie as well as bullseye mxlinux with xfce4. This is perhaps the biggest issue for me because I have a high resolution laptops one X1 Lenovo with 2500 horiz resolution and another ASUS gaming laptop with nvidia graphic card and 3k horiz resolution and I cannot possibly see such a small fonts on the display. So being able to adjust...
There was no prompt as to where to install grub. I just came across an old bug in 0.95.7 from 2017 where grub wouldn't install if no network is provisioned. Are you sure this is not the same issue since I did not configure networking before running the installer? Referring to building my ISO, I would like to do that but after following the README I got nowhere, I pm-ed you about that Paul. If you could provide us with updated instructions how to build wmlive ISO I would be very grateful. Is there...
Hi Rade, thanks for the very helpful debug logs! Apparently, the debian-installer tries to initially load some firmware files but which are not available at this time. While the firmware files are readily available in the squashfs image, they are not during installation time. This may change for the next release by including the firmware binaries also during installation time, but it will increase the ISO image size by yet another 250MB. In case you build the ISO image yourself, set the parameter...
First the laptop I used wasn't Dell but Lenovo yoga X1 G3, my bad. This hardware never worked well with wm, I went all the way back to 0.96 and still I couldn't use the trackpad buttons. This bug or lack of drivers persisted to release 13.2. Perhaps the owner of this distro should consider re basing the build back to debian, because my X1 works fine with trixie such as mxlinux 25. So to recap, the screen went dim during install. On 0.96 this worked fine and so it does in mxlinux 25. There are two...
Unable to install wmlive 13.2 trixie
Once the system installation succeeds, please run the command wmlive-debug as root and provide the resulting /tmp/wmlive_debug.tar.gz file for further analysis.
Thanks for providing the menu.hook file. It doesn't appear to contain any showstopper. The error message regarding WMReadPropListFromFile can be considered harmless.
WM Live Trixie AMD64 install - dock config amnesia.
Set bug report to pending until requested log files are provided.
i am now trying a new install without networking. Will post the results here.

Sure, here you go. Will do. I took a look at the .xsession-errors.old file for orientation, and noticed a number of errors, none of which have anything to do with disappearing dock icons as far as I know... (xfsettingsd:2338): xfsettingsd-WARNING **: 17:25:38.588: Failed to connect to session manager: Failed to connect to the session manager: SESSION_MANAGER environment variable not defined /usr/libexec/WindowMaker/wmaker(WMReadPropListFromFile(proplist.c:1560)): warning: syntax error in file /home/brian/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/menu.hook,...
Not sure how this could have happened and, above all, no idea how to reproduce it. Maybe a closer look at ~/.xsession-errors and ~/.xsession-errors.old and ~/.xsession-errors.previous could shed some light? If this ever happens again, please provide all ~/.xsession-errors* files for analysis.

I am not aware of any special forum. Since wmlive basically is just plain Debian underneath, i'd suggest to check out https://forums.debian.net for any questions.
Thanks for all the information. Is there a forum available to share tips and ask questions about WindowMaker Live? Hi Brian, assuming a typo and that you actually meant WPrefs.app: The 'Applications +' sub menu is an externally generated menu and its content can't be edited with WPrefs. This external menu's file path is '~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/menu.hook', as can be seen in the WPrefs Application menu definition panel when highlighting 'Applications +' in the root menu representation. Happy New Year to you as well. Ahh, I see. Interesting. Thanks for the information. BTW, there is another niggling issue that I have come across. The Wpress.app has an issue in the root menu editing section... The "applications" menu section should be available for dragging and dropping items, the same as the other sections, such as gnustep, preferences, help & info, etc. However, the applications menu only has a "+" plus sign next to it, rather than a "greater than¨ triangle, similar to the other...
Thanks Brian, that information clears up the missing details. So the system involved is a HUAWEI PUM-WDX9-PCB-B1 M1010 with an AMD Ryzen CPU and the wmlive variant used for installation is the amd64 one. The included /var/log/installer/syslog entries suggest this machine uses Realtek network devices, for which no matching firmware can be found and loaded during installation, because they are not included with the installer. Only after system installation is complete this firmware becomes available,...

Both issues hit the live environment install. It was finally possible for me to complete an install, when using the text expert install. However, when the installer froze at the network detection, it was necessary for me to enter a Ctrl + C command in the command area that appeared at the bottom. I was eventually able to setup my network hardware without having it detected (weird). I am writing this addition to the original ticket from a Window Maker Live 13 system (locally) installed system, so...

Hi Martin, here is something that might be of interest to you: https://ko-fi.com/wmlive/goal?g=1 Thanks for your interest and support! Regards
First a last bookworm based version will still be released sometime in autumn after summer is over. There really is no hurry switching to trixie before at least the first point release has become available. Considering all the changes in trixie, probably lots of time intensive (re)building and (re)testing will be required. Free time is scarce and the most important ingredient. If ever a trixie based variant becomes reality, don't expect any shiny new stuff. It will largely stay the same as it is...
How far are we to version 13.0 and what will be the new stuff ?
Hi Martin, wmlive almost exclusively relies on vanilla Debian packages and the related official Debian Installer infrastructure. Please open a wish list bug for the Linux kernel at https://packages.debian.org/linux for any feature requests. Regards
Hello I have request for you, could you add these two packages into release? Its helping with install on my and some other PCs https://github.com/andersfugmann/T2-Debian-Kernel#installation
OK, I understood. May I advice users with lack of Debian network knowledge to reinstall WMLive 12.8 from scratch to get a valid network configuration because they will not find any easy interface to modify an existing one in the default tools provided by WMLive. Regards
Dear Accnet Dev, please acquaint yourself with relevant networking documentation and try to figure out a solution yourself for your specific configuration. Due to the lack of financial support for my time investment, unpaid time is reserved for working on wmlive development itself. Regards
Hi, I have exported a WMLive 12.8 virtualbox VM and imported on another lan. I have to change the lan settings to meet new lan configuration. How do you advice me to proceed? Not found netplan config as usual in Bookworm, found NetworkManager config in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections but would like to know what you suggest/advice both graphical if it is possible as WMLive is provided and in command line (what do I have to modify to get a perfect new lan config). Cheers
Hello Gustavius, sorry, i can't afford investing unpaid time in installation hand holding for newbie users. Also, given the lack of provided technical details, there is no way to provide any initial support. To begin with, you'd need to detail the exact HP laptop model and the ISO variant you tried to install it with. If it is a very recent/new HP laptop, maybe it's already too new for the current wmlive? May i suggest to try another more recent beginner friendly Linux distro instead?

Thanks a lot :) While it does work from the GWorkspace's menu it doesn't work for me from the command line.

Apparently, there exists a wmtrash dockapp for WindowMaker, but it is not included with wmlive and won't be due to its rather limited usefulness. Luckily, there is a dockable trash application integrated with the GWorkspace.app file manager. It can be easily invoked from within GWorkspace's menu "Tools > Show Recycler", or opened directly as /usr/bin/Recycler.

Guys I am wondering if there is/was any implementation of NeXTStep trash app in windowmaker? I am sure this has been discussed before.
Glad it now works for you!

Update: I just realized I was running i386 dvd on amd64 PC unintentionally. i386 comes up as latest in sorceforge, maybe this needs to be changed to amd64. Sorry for the noise. I just burned and booted amd64 into live and it came up ok. Thanks for prompt responses guys and sorry for the noise.
So you actually burned a DVD from the ISO? In order to exclude a faulty DVD, please rather create a bootable USB pen drive as explained in the INSTALL.txt and then use it booting into the live session again. Thanks

Are you able to switch to a virtual console pressing for example Ctr-Alt-F5 and then login? If yes, please switch to root using the command 'sudo su -' and provide a compressed/zipped copy of the /var/log/installer folder, the /var/log/syslog and the /var/log/Xorg.0.log files. Thanks
