The much exaggerated death of the WiX toolset

There has been some suggestion that the WiX toolset is a dead project because we have not released a drop to the SourceForge release point in a long while. Those fears are unfounded for three reasons. First, WiX v2 is stable so we are not expecting another build of that version unless a showstopper bug shows up. Second, weekly drops show up at the Weekly Releases (http://wix.sourceforge.net/releases) release point regularly. Finally, pushing to the SourceForge release point (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=105970) is a manual process for us and ends up a lower priority. In any case, development is still very much active and the wix-users mailing list (http://wix.sourceforge.net/mailinglists.html#wix-users) is still the best place to get your questions answered.

WiX v2.0.3719.0 - Release of the Primes

This is the first release of the WiX toolset
built by NAnt. There are many bug fixes and
support for MSI 4.0 was added. Most
importantly, Votive should be installing
again.

This release also begins our glide path down
to a production quality release for the WiX
toolset. Please, upgrade to this version of
the toolset and help bang out the last few
bugs.

Votive v2.0.2613.0 - Introducing Votive.

Votive is a Visual Studio 2003 extension. It allows you to create "WiX projects" that act like any other project in a VS solution. The WiX toolset is integrated in this install, so all you should need is this MSI an no other downloads from Source Forge. Unless, of course, you want to integrate the toolset into a build lab. In that case, I recommend just downloading the binaries .zip file.... read more

WiX v2.0.2520.0 - Jolt Me, Baby!

This release fixes many bugs, cleans up the compiler code significantly, and vastly improves the WiX.chm documentation. All of this in anticipation of evaluation by the "Jolt Committee" since the WiX toolset was announced as a Jolt Award Finalist. Woohoo!

Note: There is a schema change in this release, changing the "RadioGroup" element to "RadioButtonGroup" and allowing Registry key elements to be nested under one another.

WiX v2.0.2419.0 - Pre-Holiday Fixed Toolset

This release of the toolset fixes a bug in v2.0.2415.0 that prevented ListItem elements from working properly. There is also some more cleanup on the Search elements in the compiler, but that is mostly inconsequential.

If you picked up v2.0.2415.0 please pick up this release instead.

WiX v2.0.2415.0 - Pre-Holiday Release includes Schema Change

This release contains one schema change (RadioButton and ListItem, see mailing list for more information) plus several small bugs and documenation fixes in this release. Please, pick up this release to notice the deprecated elements. We're driving for a stable release candidate early next year.

As always, send any questions or initial bug reports to the wix-users mailing list.

WiX v2.0.2110.0 - Enabling the WiX CustomActions

Along with fixing a number of bugs in the core toolset, this update includes the sca.wixlib and the wixca.wixlib that will enable you to take advantage of the (still poorly documented) WiX Server CustomActions.

To do so, simply use one of the extension elements (like User or WebSite) in your source file and include sca.wixlib and/or wixca.wixlib on your link line. The WiX toolset should incorporate all of the CustomActions necessary to get the extended features working.

WiX v2.0.1927.0 - Two Month update

In this release, tons of fixes plus a new tool (tallow - to help generate source code). Also, new features include: ability to create .pcp files (Patch Creation Packages), support for configurable Merge Modules, and several other user requested features. Finally, there are a number of deprecated features and minor schema changes so upgrade carefully. The goal is to lockdown breaking changes as soon as possible (hopefully, in next couple months).

WiX v2.0.1706.0 - post-Cinco de Mayo update

The Windows Installer XML v2.0.1706.0 post Cinco de Mayo release. Lots of small fixes and one huge perf fix that could be significant if you created uncompress layouts with deep directory structures.

WiX v2.0.1629.0 - End of the Beginning

The Windows Installer XML toolset v2.0.1629.0 release. The significant add in this release is the "Binder" that handles all the heavy lifting of generating the MSI file and laying out the files. This is one step closer to getting a solid object model for building MSI/MSM files via managed code.

WiX v2.0.1621.0

Fixed a few more known issues in the compiler and linker plus a number of user submitted bugs in the decompiler. Hoepfully soon, all we'll have left is issues in the decompiler and documentation.

WiX v2.0.1615.0 - TaX Day Update

The Windows Installer XML toolset v2.0.1615.0 has just been released. Lots of small bug fixes, a little more documentation, and a couple examples added to the sources. More fixes to come in the future. The Windows Installer XML (WiX) is a toolset that builds Windows installation packages from XML source code. The toolset supports a command line environment that developers may integrate into their build processes to build MSI and MSM setup packages.

WiX v2.0.1605.0 - Microsoft's first OSS project

The Windows Installer XML (WiX) is a toolset that builds Windows installation packages from XML source code. The project, originally developed internal to Microsoft, was released today under the Common Public License (a first for Microsoft). With this release developers outside Microsoft can take advantage of the same toolset being used today to create the installation packages for products like Microsoft Office, Microsoft SQL Server, and many others. More information about the toolset and its OSS release can be found at: http://blogs.msdn.com/robmen/archive/2004/04/05/107709.aspx
