I misused the term "boot" then. System startup gets as far as the 
completion of the login screen, then freezes with a non-spinning beach 
ball.

That actually works perfectly. The card isn't recognized if I 
insert it while the system is active, but if I insert it while the 
system is in sleep mode, it recognizes the card and connects to the WLAN 
when it awakes.
