But, completely fed up with this whole issue, early this week I ordered a Buffalo AirStation G54 pc card. Supposedly it's just for Windows, but five minutes after the WS2 detected its presence, the laptop was finally online again via our AEBS wireless LAN, with my having added no drivers at all. X28 thinks it's an Airport card. (Airport 3.1.1 is installed.) And, so far, while iStumbler 0.8.3 always crashes on startup and AP Grapher doesn't work quite right, both MacStumbler and KisMAC (no driver patching here) work well with the reasonably-priced Buffalo.
