Go order online or pick-up at a local Best Buy (best price and easiest 
location to deal with - tried all the rest!) a Buffalo Air Station Card 
WLI-CB-G54A.  This card 'sees' all ranges of WiFi, a-g.

I've been down the same road you're on .. with a G3 400MHz Lombard 
Bronze Key; OSX 10.2 thru 10.3 Panther.  And this IS the solution.

Use the AirPort software that is native to the OSX and your up and 
running from then on.
