Did you ever try upgrading your original Airport with a firmware from another base station? Take for example the AP-500. http://www.personaltelco.net/index.cgi/ApFirmwareSwapping is a webpage for this.... Also, there's a place to repair faulty capacitors in original Airport stations... Forget where that website is but just search for it... I've got a Proxim (Agere/Avaya/Lucent/WhateverLatestName) 802.11b AP-200 and love it....
