Hello list, I believe some of the responses I got re: KisMAC went directly to me rather than to the list so today I'm reporting back with my results. Thanks to everyone who wrote to me with information! The current version of KisMAC available for download publically (via MacUpdate etc) could crash your PowerBook upon putting it to sleep even after you quit the program and WirelessDriver is reloaded, and even after a reboot. I use a Ti400, 10.2.6 and an Orinoco Gold card, and it happened to me. Rob Frohne mentioned a bug fix that takes care of this; it is currently available as a beta-beta-beta via a download link from the KisMAC mailing list. I recommend visiting <http://www.freelists.org/archives/kismac/06-2003> and scrolling down to view the latest messages in chronological order; the file with the fix is called "KisMAC005a2.zip" but I won't provide a direct link in case Mick updates it again (it's been updated twice since Friday, how's that for customer support!). (The mailing list software they use treats the grouping of threads a little strangely; I missed a few messages in Thread view so to save y'all the trouble I recommend the chronological view) I imagine this fix will be rolled into the regular KisMAC beta in the next wee while so if you're not feeling adventurous, just wait for a new update to come up on MacUpdate or VersionTracker or whatever. KisMAC *does* work beautifully; it found lots of available wireless networks that reach my apartment and it has really nice graphs of signal strength, etc. It will be a terrific program for all of us once all these kinks are ironed out between it and the WirelessDriver! On that note, when will we get a new update to the WirelessDriver itself? ;) regards, brian @joannou.net |
