I believe I have found why so many people are having trouble installing 
the drivers.  I recently re-partitioned my Powerbook G3 HD and had the 
same problems running a valid installation.  Why?  Because I executed 
the installer from the mounted .DMG!

   The .kext was never installed.

Solution:
   Option-drag the mounted disk to your desktop.  It may still look the 
same, but it is actually a FOLDER, not a hard drive.  Now execute the 
installer from the folder and everything should install correctly.  Run 
the Troubleshooting utility to verify that the 3 files are installed 
correctly and you have en1 with a valid IP address.
