I've run into a problem with linksys and other non-apple product and the airport extreem with wep. If I entered the key as ascii, non-airport drivers (and sometimes I saw it with airport drivers) will not be able to use wep. The solution I found was to enter the key in hex on the airportextreme base station. So convert your password to hex and enter it with a "$" at the front.
