This is a known issue. Somewhere in the docs it says something like "If you remove and reinsert the card, it will cause a kernel panic. Don't do this." You can put your laptop to sleep, remove the card, transport it to the new location, reinsert the card, and wake it up. I can't remember, and am unwilling to experiment at the moment - but I think (I THINK!) you can use the PCCard icon next to the clock to "power down" the card. After you've powered it down, I don't think you'll get a kernel panic if you reinsert it. But you might.
