Usually when I've seen this, it's been due to WEP, or MAC address filtering. I'd recommend removing all those settings from your access point, so it's wide open, and also making sure you don't have WEP selected on your laptop. If at all possible, if there's another WAP where you can test your card, or another wireless enabled computer you can use in your environment, they can tell you that your laptop is fine, or your WAP is working correctly, respectively.
