The easiest way to solve this problem is to re-configure your basestation using the Airport Admin Utility with the pppoe information and set it up to automatically connect to your ISP when it detects network activity. Set your powerbook to connect via Airport/TCP-IP/dhcp and you'll never have to manually connect again, just launch a browser/email etc and you will be connected.
