Actually, you do get an error except that you never see it unless you also
run the Console application ( Applications > Utilities > Console )

Anytime something appears to "do nothing", Open the Console app and poke
around in the logs. Usually, you will find something. If the event just
happened, it will be at the bottom (most recent) part of the log.

It is a little surprising to me that the unix syslog process which records
the errors (at least it is called syslog in System V, not sure about BSD or
OSX which is based on BSD) doesn't make something bounce up and down in the
Dock to give you some notification of an error event.
