I also am having trouble with the Signal meter application. 
However I do not get an error.  I launch it and nothing happens.
 

Also is there anyway to detect open networks around you? A scanning
application, perhaps... The only way I've been able to log on
to them is if I know the network name.   

I am running OS X.2.1 on a wallstreet with orinoco silver and
the b5 driver.  Thanks in advance for your help.

and also, thanks Lee for the suggestions about WEP.  I'll check
with my network guy and see if he can figure out what I'm doing
wrong.
