I've noticed two common reasons for this: sometimes people don't know
that the silver only works with 40 bit encryption, and try to use the
larger key; sometimes there is confusion about the form in which to enter
the WEP key. Enter the numerical key into the wirelessdriver panel just
as it's entered into most standard wireless routers, with no prefix.
(Apple's Airport basestation uses a key in some other form.)
