to the best of my understanding (I might be wrong) the current beta_5 driver doesn't support WEP.

I use a Farallon SkyLine 11mbps, with an Access Point from SMC, and am quite satisfied with both.

I'm not sure there is such a thing as "best card". I believe they are all alike more or less.

The effective distance depends on a number of factors:
- I understand that the AirPort card in your PB G4 is located under the keyboard, and that's not an ideal solution, but it should not cut at 30 feet.
Anyway, the PB should not be resting on a metallic, or metallic-like surface.
- the location of the Airport Station (if that's what you use) can be critical. It should be, ideally, as high as possible in your house, and not shielded by metallic surfaces, or by walls containing metallic rods.
- the vicinity of pulse emitting devices (TV sets, microwave ovens, you name it you have it) doesn't contribute to good and clean wireless propagation.

- all this, of course, makes for a lot of ideal and not ideal conditions, and one has to face realities.

Other users in this list have reported good results with Orinoco, SMC and other cards which I do not remember at the moment.

I'm sure you will get more information from other users.
