I have an apple base station, wep is off, EN1 shows up and it configures
automatically using DCHP. I think I've uninstalled it and installed it
again already.  I can see a strong wireless signal in the wireless
panel.

Tom,

what type of router do you have?, is the WEP on? or the MAC control on? 
  Also are En1 or En2 showing up in the network preferences? is it 
configured correctly?  Also try to uninstall and reinstall the driver, 
at first it didn't work for me, doing that worked.
