Bill, I summarized a method for getting the driver installed a several days ago. There should be no reason to log on as root to install it, however you are correct that the installer should be improved (it will be--just wait a little while). The real problem is that most people do not provide accurate descriptions of their problems (e.g. you provide very little description) and most of the problems are actually network configuration / access point configuration problems rather than wirelessdriver problems. Technically, nothing is stopping anyone from making a shareware version of the driver as the BSD license allows this. The real issue is supporting all the users that have mis-configured their network /access point settings. Given that each persons network is different there is no "surefire" set of instructions to get it to work. The troubleshooting script helps somewhat but cannot solve the local network problems. If you want help, post more information about your set-up, what works as expected as what does not, post the output of the script too.
