It's intentional.  It's supposed to be so you can identify which card 
is in the slot.

I don't know how much luck you'd have, but you could try suggesting 
alternative approaches to Apples GUI design team.  The menu is 
maintained by the same guy that does the PCCard support module, but his 
hands are tied as far as the GU design goes.
