When I go into Edit | Settings, the only sound system I see listed is OSS, and the only sound card I see is /dev/dsp.
When I run something like xmms I know that the output is currently through ALSA.
If I do try to set OSS as my sound card, it says:
Could not open audio device : check that the device is not busy (used by another application) and that your audio settings are correct.
Oh ya, I'm using Ubuntu 7.10.
Have you any services launched who can disturb audio applications ?
A audio daemon service like ESD (esound, ..) , artsd, Jack, etc... could disturb audio devices detection.
Try to disable all related audio applications, and relaunch Wired to see what happend.
Where did you find the deb? Because someone who package wired for ubuntu uses virtualbox, that has Oss as sound system, so doesn't has alsa support. My advice is to compile to yourself
