#2 Location bar a la Windiff

GUI (348)
Brice C.

A Location bar (called Picture in windiff) that gives an overview of the changes, and where text blocks have been moved to would be really useful.

This might be along the same lines of an idea I have.
Either down the middle or along the sides have a small
space left for icons. It would be nice to have some color
graphical cues to let you know you've merged this section
of text over. Right now, once you merge something, you
have to remember what it is you've merged and what you

Windiff style location bars may not be appropriate.
WinMerge inserts blank lines to sync the left and right
views. As for the suggestion by enlightened, that would be
nice. However, we have to take into account that after
merge, the user may further use the editing mode to edit
the data. If you want to maintain some indication of the
previously merged section, it may be difficult to account
    for editing changes.

Any further suggestions on how to implement this will be

Maybe showing where a block was moved to is not easy, but just
showing where the differences are should be. It would be like a
small version of the whole text window, just without text, only
coloring. Like that you see with one glimpse if there are many
changes or just a few, if they are "big" or "small", if they
    are in
the beginning or in the end...

We will need 2 location bars one for each file, on either side
of the window. Araxis Merge implements this type of location
bars. It's not at all like windiff, but I think it's a lot more
    intuitive than windiff, for browsing.

Dennis, you propably don't mind I'm assigning this to nobody. :)

Perry is working with backend code for this, finding moved
blocks (patch #891498 moved block detection).

Two bars idea is interesting one. I haven't seen Araxis UI,
but some I have seen tend to get messy when there are more
changes and moved blocks. It gets unusable when its mostly

Two maps with some colors propably is simple and usable
solution. I think it needs to show diff locations and
selected diff location. Then if selected diff is moved, it
shows destination diff with another color.

I've applied that patch to CVS. So next release will have
    this location bar.
