Sequel for patch [ 809320 ] Open files with external
editor.
I am using HexWorkshop to compare binary files. I'd like
some context menu entry as a sample interface. As
open left or open right, but with both files on the
command line.
Maybe with an optional string for switches
(HexWorkshop does not handle interesting switches, but
some other diffing tools may).

    I agree with this RFE.

I think we should design that dirview context menu better.
There are already a lot of items and more to come. There are
a lot of things to do with files. :)

One possibility is to add general items to open as submenus
(like my patch for open to external editor does).

Maybe new popup item "Open both..." and then we can put
items to open both files to external diff tool or whatever
there. (I Just applied my "Open to external editor" patch
which added two popups "Open left..." and "Open right...".)

How about a new subitem on the "Open left" (and "Open
right") context menu, "with binary editor", right under
"with external editor", and allow configuration of binary
editor in the Edit Options/Registry next to where you
    configure the external editor.

Although, I'm not sure why these are on the registry tab --
probably just because that was a convenient place to add the
    external editor box ?

I think Laoran wants to open *two* files. 'Open left' and
'Open right' open only one file. I think we could have other
uses for 'Open both' item too. It could also include items
like 'delete' for deleting both files with one command etc.

    re: options tabs
yeah, I know... It's not logical place. I actually had a
part in my patch for opening to external editor to rename
"Registry" tab to "Paths". But I dropped that part because I
thought its better to really designe those options pages
later than start just renaming them randomly.

    re: Open both

Oh, right, how to invoke it to open both -- I understand
now. I guess new item is required, eg "Open both" as you say.

    re: registry options tab
Ok, that is what I thought; it is not optimal arrangement,
but it works for now until someone rearranges options (and I
    am not volunteering).

Thanks Kimmo, you described well what I wish.

There is a small inconsistency in the submenu : the top is
classed by action (copy, delete), and the bottom by side
(open left/open right). The "delete both" already exists, but it
is in the top part, so classed by action.
It is just an observation, as I have no better idea than the
    current submenu.

    > There is a small inconsistency in the submenu [..]

Yep, its done intentionally. Somebody could do open menu
    like this:
    Open >
    Left >
    Whith registered app...
    With external editor...
    With...
    Right >
    Whith registered app...
    With external editor...
    With...

It would be only one top-level menu item and more
consistent, but harder to use. Deep submenu structures are
not nice. So Open Left and Open Right are more like
    shortcuts for better usability. :)

I think this is superceded by RFE '#905728 Invoke tool
programs for dirview items'. Opening two paths propably
requires some commandline formatting etc which is hard to do
with just menu items. But allowing user to define one's own
set of tools and commandlines for those is a lot more
    flexible...
