#3 functions called like `foo` do modify variables

No

On Unix a function call in backquotes means "execute
the function in a forked subshell" which means that
the variables in the callers namespace aren't affected.

On Windows these function calls create an execution
thread which works on the same variables as the caller
does an therefore it may modify variables used by the
caller.
