MediaWiki 1.3.0beta2 released

This is a *BETA RELEASE* of MediaWiki 1.3.0, after a couple weeks of testing and tweaking on Wikipedia. Things mostly work at this point, but installation and upgrade paths may be awkward or broken on some systems.

Please read the release notes for details of what's changed and how to upgrade. (Beta1 was not released as a package, but was available from CVS.)

The easiest upgrade path from a 1.2 MediaWiki install is to set up the 1.3 wiki in a fresh directory, run the web-based installer, and point it at the same database. BACK UP YOUR DATABASE FIRST! Upgrading the database may take a while, or may fail on some systems.... read more

MediaWiki 1.2.0rc3 released

A third release candidate of MediaWiki 1.2.0 is now available for download. This release adds compatibility with register_globals = off, support for more somewhat attractive URLs without a mod_rewrite setup, and bug fixes to the installer and elsewhere.

MediaWiki 1.2.0 includes improved inline image and thumbnailing support, smoother account management, and a number of interface tweaks as well as numerous bug fixes and backend features (squid cache purging, authenticated SMTP, tighter upload security, PHP5 compatibility). Also fixes an incompatibility with MySQL 3.2.x in the default install that cropped up in 1.1. MediaWiki 1.2.0rc2 released

Release candidate 2 of MediaWiki 1.2.0 has been released.

Since the first release candidate, an in-place web-based install script has been added. While still a bit experimental and incomplete, it makes it much easier to get a new wiki started, particularly where shell access isn't available for the old command-line installer.

Welcome to Wikipedia

Wikipedia is transitioning to PHP / MySQL, and has a number of small bugs that with enough eyeballs, will be simple to track down. There are also some features not implimented, and people who have worked on PHP and MySQL are needed to look at what exists and provide implementations. see it at http://wikipedia.sourceforge.net/fpw/wiki.phtml

On the project homepage there is also a need for regular people to look at the data, and edit it for grammar and content.
