Currently if we navigate through the history (by clicking
the "next 20" links) , the only way to find out how far we
have navigated is to check the "next 20" and "previous
20" links and see if they are enabled or not.

It anyway is a crude way because we never get our
absolute position. A lot of problems would be solved if the
left-most field of a history line - the bullet - is replaced
by a number, which would ideally be the version number.

Also it'll get a lot easier to refer to versions in talk pages.
Rather than referring to "the edit made by User Tortoise
on 14th Sep 2003 13:13:13 hours" we can just say
"version number 43".

Version numbers would need to be assigned in the old table (and
perhaps cur), which is theoretically doable but will require
appropriate coordination and locking, and a change to the table
    structure.
