A, and very softly moved back to his place by Germaine's side. No one in the room observed the movement, not even Guerchard: he was watching Sonia too intently. Sonia found the key, and held it out to Guerchard. He shook his head and said: "There is no reason to search your bag--none whatever. Have you any other luggage?" She shrank back a little from his piercing eyes, almost as if their gaze scared her. "Yes, my trunk ... it's upstairs in my bedroom too ... open." She spoke in a faltering voice, and her troubled eyes could not meet those of the detective. "You were going out, I think," said Guerchard gently. "I was asking leave to go out. There is some shopping that must be done," said Sonia. "You do not see any reason why Mademoiselle Kritchnoff should not go out, M. Formery, do you?" said Guerchard. "Oh, no, none whatever; of course she can go out," said M. Formery. Sonia turned round to go. "One moment," said Guerchard, coming for-ward. "You've only got that wrist-bag with you?" "Yes," said Sonia. "I have my money and my handkerchief in it." And she held it out to him. Guerchard's keen eyes darted into it; and he muttered, "No point in looking in that. I don't suppose any one would have had the audacity--" and he stopped. Sonia made a couple of steps toward the door, turned, hesitated, came back to the couch, and picked up her cloak. There was a sudden gleam in Gu |

Iness. By and by I heard the king and the duke come up; so I rolled off my pallet and laid with my chin at the top of my ladder, and waited to see if anything was going to happen. But nothing did. So I held on till all the late sounds had quit and the early ones hadn't begun yet; and then I slipped down the ladder. CHAPTER XXVII. I CREPT to their doors and listened; they was snoring. So I tiptoed along, and got down stairs all right. There warn't a sound anywheres. I peeped through a crack of the dining-room door, and see the men that was watching the corpse all sound asleep on their chairs. The door was open into the parlor, where the corpse was laying, and there was a candle in both rooms. I passed along, and the parlor door was open; but I see there warn't nobody in there but the remainders of Peter; so I shoved on by; but the front door was locked, and the key wasn't there. Just then I heard somebody coming down the stairs, back behind me. I run in the parlor and took a swift look around, and the only place I see to hide the bag was in the coffin. The lid was shoved along about a foot, showing the dead man's face down in there, with a wet cloth over it, and his shroud on. I tucked the money-bag in under the lid, just down beyond where his hands was crossed, which made me creep, they was so cold, and then I run back across the room and in behind the door. The person coming was Mary Jane. She went to the coffin, very soft, and kneeled down and looked in; then she put up her handkerchief, and I see she begun to cry, though I couldn't hear her, and her back was to me. I slid out, and as I passed the dining-room I thought I'd make sure them watchers hadn't seen me; so I looked through the crack, and everything was all right. They hadn't stirred. I slipped up to bed, feeling ruther blue, on accounts of the thing playing out that way after I had took so much trouble and run so much resk about it. Says I, if it could stay where it is, all right; because when we get down the river a hundred mile or two I could write back to Mary Jane, and she could dig him up again and get it; |

M all the sadness of a last farewell. Crystal even had felt a tinge of remorse--when she saw how sad he was--that she had not responded more warmly to his kiss. It almost seemed as if her heart rebelled against it, and when he pressed her with his accustomed passionate ardour to his breast, she had felt a curious shrinking within herself, a desire to push him away, even though her whole heart went out to him with pity and with sorrow. And now here was this letter. Crystal was a long time before she made up her mind to open it: the paper--damp with the rain--seemed to hold a certain fatefulness within its folds. At last she read the letter, and long after she had read it she sat at the open window, listening to the dreary, monotonous patter of the rain, and to the distant sounds of moving horses and men, the rattle of wheels, the bugle calls, the departure of the allied troops to meet the armies of the great adventurer on the billowing plains of Belgium. This is what Maurice had written to her a few moments before he left; and it must have taken him some time to pen the lengthy epistle. "MY BEAUTIFUL CRYSTAL, "I may never come back. Something tells me that my life, such as it is--empty and worthless enough, God knows--has nearly run its full course. But if I do come back to claim the happiness which your love holds out for me,--I will not face you again with so deep a stain upon mine honour. I did not tell you before because I was too great a coward. I could not bear to think that you would despise me--I could not encounter the look of contempt in your eyes: so I remained silent to the call of honour. And now I spea |

It is probable that these monuments were first built before the time of Moses, at least two centuries before the Trojan war. There are still several obelisks in Egypt; there is one erect, and another fallen at Alexandria, between the new city and the light-house; one at Matarea, among the ruins of old Heliopolis; one in the territory of Fayoum, near ancient Arsinoe; eight or ten among the ruins of Thebes; the two finest at Luxor, at the entrance of the temple, &c. These obelisks, exclusively of the pedestals, are mostly from 50 to 100 feet high, and of a red polished granite (sienite); a few of the later ones are of w |
