#24 versiontool max hangs with certain strings

on wigwam 3.1, running 'versiontool max 2.1-1
2.1.RC3-1' will hang in an infinite loop. I'd come up
with a patch myself but currently have a little too
much to do at work. I'm filing the bug in case someone
has some time to look at it, otherwise I'll work out a
patch later on.
