The Widelands Development Team is proud to announce the immediate availability of the stable release Widelands 1.2. Since the release of version 1.1, we implemented several hundreds of new features and bugfixes; for example, to name just a few of the highlights: - **UI Plugins** are add-ons that can add more functionality to the user interface - **Naval Warfare** preview: Invade foreign coasts using warships! *This is included as a preview feature and needs to be explicitly enabled in the game setup screen.* - **Soldier garrisons** for ports and headquarters - Balancing changes to the Amazon economy - Fifth scenario for the Frisian campaign - More settings in the game setup screen, such as configurable durations for timed win conditions - Diplomacy handling for the computer players - Stick **pinned notes** onto map fields to mark important points - **Hyperlinks** let you navigate within the encyclopedia and to the online help - Easy **maps publishing** inside the editor - High-resolution images for many more units - Accessibility enhancements for many user interface components - Expose more functionality to the add-ons and scenario scripting interface - Fixed many crashes and hangs and enhanced error handling Widelands 1.2 is translated completely into Catalan, German, Hungarian, Low German, and Russian, and the translations for 8 other languages are more than ⅔ complete. Widelands is distributed for Windows (64-bit and 32-bit), Mac OS X ≥ 12.0 (Intel 64-bit) and Arm (≥ 14.0), Linux (AppImage, 64 bit), and in source code. Also, the AI has been rewritten to use a genetic algorithm. The user interface comes with new features that make it easier to use, like map zoom, dropdown menus, a new ships list, and improved keyboard navigation. Build 20 also continues the behind the scenes cleanup, polish and modernization that was started with Build 19. There have been additional improvements to the stability and performance, as well as numerous bug-fixes. The Widelands Development Team is proud to announce the immediate availability of Widelands Build 19. Widelands is a free, cross-platform strategy game in which players control the fate of a small tribe that can grow into a big empire, in a style of play that is unique in the open source world. Build 19 focuses on behind the scene cleanup, polish and modernization - for example we ported Widelands to the modern c++11 standard and removed old code that was a maintenance burden. These changes will facilitate feature development going forward, but they come at a price: Savegames from Build 18 and older do not load in this version of Widelands and we now require graphics hardware acceleration (OpenGL 2.1). We also recommend that you uninstall Build 18 before installing Build 19, because our file structure has changed a lot due to big changes to the engine. Build 19 also comes with a bag of goodies. Some of the highlights are: * Seafaring AI and other AI improvements * Message filtering * New in-game and in-editor help system * Efficient graphics loading and rendering. * New starting condition “Trading Outpost” * New win condition “Artifacts” * 4 Tutorials * Improved Barbarians and Empire campaigns * 3 new maps * No separate worlds anymore. All terrains can now be used on all maps. Old maps stay compatible. * No separate tribes anymore: Though in game the tribes still seem separate, they are in fact now the same tribe with different buildings and workers enabled. This allows for interesting concepts down the line like a mixed economy or trading. * New animations, overlay images and icons * New forested mountains terrains * Many menu redesigns * Improved support for non-Latin scripts and right-to-left languages * Various small balance changes (for example more experience in mines, stronger barbarian soldiers) * Behind the scenes: move to SDL 2, Build system refactoring, move to c++ 11, continuous integration, move to Transifex and merge bot. Also tons of cleanups to the code base. As usual, there have been many more improvements to the usability and performance, as well as numerous game-play improvements and bug-fixes. Known issues ============= Widelands Build 17 takes us a good step forward towards a stable 1.0 version. However, as Widelands is still under heavy development, there are some unfinished features and minor known bugs that haven't been fixed in the release of Build 17. The following list is not meant to be complete, but is supposed to help you avoiding known problems and handling them if they appear. 1st) Compile time issues ------------------------ * Widelands does not compile, if using gcc 4.7. Fix: add "#include <unistd.h>" to the file "src/main.cc" 2nd) Unfinished feature "seafaring" issues ------------------------------------------ Build 17 ships with the very basics of the new "seafaring" feature. Many sub-features are not yet implemented, so don't waste your time searching for them ;). The limitations are as follows: * It is not possible to colonize other islands, just transport between existing ports. * There are no "rowboat roads" yet. * Computer players do not use seafaring. * The only official map supporting seafaring is the multiplayer scenario "Together we're strong" (Start it in scenario mode!) * On maps without port buildspaces, the shipyard is buildable, but will not produce ships. * On maps with port buildspaces, it might happen that ships are build in small lakes, so best place shipyards near the coast but away from smaller lakes. 3rd) OpenGL rendering issues ---------------------------- * The "smooth" rendering of the terrain does not work on all graphics chips. 4th) Other known bugs --------------------- * Editor: Unable to reload a self created map in the editor. Hello, Widelands Tournament 2010 The WiHack 2010 Reloaded was just announced and I promised you a tournament. And so it shall be! A quick run down: * Everyone (except for Kristin) can participate. However, for the brackets we need a number of players that is a power of two; so be quick with your sign up or you might be one of the few rounded off. * You do not have to come to the WiHack to participate, you can also join in over the internet. * Finals however will be played while the WiHack happens so we can watch the games life here in Karlsruhe. * Signup will only run for a week and a bit. So be quick or be out: Read the Wiki Page, then send a PM to Kristin. * The winner might get a T-Shirt. :) I am very much looking forward to this. This time, the Widelands Development Team has to announce an event that is at least as important: Announcing the WiHack - Widelands International Hacking and Coding (in) Karlsruhe 2010 For the first time in its existence, the widelands community - that is players and developers - will meet in persona. The meetings is in Karlsruhe - in the middle of Germany - from the 2nd to the 5th of January 2010. The participation is free of charge and everybody is welcome to join in. We will use those 4 days to play widelands together and hack on it to advance its development. This means that unless all consume-groups can be satisfied, nothing is consumed when the command fails. This will fix many bugs in the game data where programs had for example "2=consume smoked_fish,smoked_meat 2" and "3=consume bread 2". If there was not 2 bread, it would consume 2 smoked_fish or 2 smoked_meat and then fail. * Get rid of the command check. It was only a work-around for the previously deficient command consume (and some programs forgot to use it). * Implement the new command return. It can return from a program. There are 3 different return values; Failed, Completed and Skipped. Only programs returning Failed and Completed will affect statistics. A program that reaches the end will be considered to have implicitly returned Completed. The return command can optionally take a condition. Currently only two conditions are supported; economy needs ware_type and workers need experience. The former will allow a program to have a command "return=skipped unless economy needs marblecolumn". It will prevent Game Over as a result of a production deadlock on marble when a user forgets to turn off a stonemason for a while. This fixes the huge problem with production deadlocks that hit every new player in their first games and every experienced player once in a while. The condition makes a query to the economy, which now simply checks if there are no warehouse supplies that supply the ware type. This can of course be made much smarter later. The latter is used in the barbarian micro-brewery to let it practice making beer until the brewer has become a master_brewer even if the economy does not need any beer. * Extend the produce command to take any number of ware types with quantities. * Fix the call command to validate that the called program exists. This requires changing declaration order in some data files (for example if "work" calls "seed", "program=seed" must come before "program=work" in the "global" section of the productionsite definition. (However the definition order of the programs does not matter.) This fixes the bug that a call command may fail at run-time because the called program does not exists. * Extend the call command with an optional error handling specification (call=<program_name> [on failure {ignore|repeat|fail}]). It will make it possible to ignore a failure of a called program and continue the calling program, or repeat the failed program until it succeeds. * Extend the sleep and animate commands. If no duration is given as the last parameter, the return value from a previous action is used for duration. This makes it possible to for example let the mining command calculate how long the following sleep/animation should last, depending on ore concentration and mining depth. * Get rid of the set command and the associated catch and nostats flags. * Fix the mine command to parse and validate its parameters at parse-time instead of at run-time. This fixes the bug that the game engine could fail with the message "Should mine resource <resource_type>, which doesn't exist in world. Tribe is not compatible with world!!" at run-time the first time a mining command is executed. * Fix most other commands that had insufficient validation or did parsing at run-time (for example the consume command reparsed its wares at each execution). * Optimize the parsing by eliminating needless string copying. - Rename the building property "enhance_to" to "enhancement" and validate that the given building type exists. - Improved editor handling of bobs and animals, so they can not be placed on invalid locations. - Implemented loading of savegames in multi player - Only allow attacking seen buildings. - Improved computer player behaviour. - Updated and cleaned up tribes economies. - Introduced automatic update of Campaign-list via campaign-menu. - Added global objects usable in every world. - Added 12 new maps (9 from map contest). - Added atlantean building graphics. - Added a lot of new sounds and integrated them in the game. - Rework of campaign missions. - Fix bugs in parsing of building types'sbuildcosts and inputs. First Widelands Map Contest The Widelands development team are pleased to announce their first map contest. Entries are invited from all Widelands players. Use your creativity in designing original new maps, and compete for the grand prize! We hope this contest will result in many new maps for the official Widelands distribution. Even if your entry doesn't win a prize, if its good enough, it's likely we'll include it in our next official release. To make sure this is possible, all submissions must be licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 2. When all the submissions are in, a jury will choose up to ten finalists in each category. The community will then vote to decide the final winners. Hello, Build10 of Widelands, a free, cross-platform strategy game has been released. The game is heavily inspired by Settlers II by BlueByte. Widelands uses SDL as graphics and input library and is currently available for Linux/x86, Mac OS X, Windows 32 and in Source Code. There is a lot of enhancements in this version compared to build9. A whole new tribe, various new musics and sounds, new worlds and two new campaign missions. Also a lot of in game features were added and a few bugs fixed. We were not lazy.
