the installer gets to ~90% and then backs out finishing with a message that the installer was interrupted before it could complete.

Had reported issue when installing 32-bit on Windows 7 Pro. Then used 64-bit installer - Installed fine.
Do you mean that you installed 32bit installer on 64 bit machine?
Yes. I downloaded the standard (non-64bit) version on a 64 bit PC. It failed. I continued as described above.
I cannot install on W8.1 tried both 64 and 32 setup. Can provide full log but I'm unable to post it here
