I created Whonix 0.5.5. It contains many small security, usability improvements, features and bug fixes. Whonix 0.5.5 may become the official follower of 0.4.5, unless severe, annoying or confusing bugs are found. If you like, you can test it. Download: [https://sourceforge.net/projects/whonix/files/whonix-0.5.5/](https://sourceforge.net/projects/whonix/files/whonix-0.5.5/) Changelog: [https://sourceforge.net/p/whonix/wiki/ChangelogNEXT/](https://sourceforge.net/p/whonix/wiki/ChangelogNEXT/) URL: http://sourceforge.net/p/whonix/featureblog/2013/02/-call-for-testing---whonix-055/ |

As promised, I uploaded 0.5.4... Yet, I am not encouraging to test yet. There aren't big problems, it's just that 0.5.5 will come real soon. In 0.5.4 is a small issue with Tor Browser when you start it for the first time. [https://check.torproject.org](https://check.torproject.org) says proxy server is refusing connections. When you restart it, it will work. The last small bugs are hopefully fixed in 0.5.5 which I am in process of creating and uploading. 0.5.5 **might** become the next stable version for a while. In case you can't :) or don't want to wait: [https://sourceforge.net/projects/whonix/files/whonix-0.5.4/](https://sourceforge.net/projects/whonix/files/whonix-0.5.4/) URL: http://sourceforge.net/p/whonix/featureblog/2013/02/testing-delayed-for-a-day-or-so/ |

There are three different ways to archive #Anonymity for having location hidden servers. #Tor Hidden Services, pagekite, .onion webspace and Anonymous Third Party Hosts. There are many so called offshore or anonymous hosting companies. Most of those hosting companies do not really offer #anonymity Most require valid registration data (real name etc.), forbid registration over Tor and/or do not offer anonymous payment methods. The ones listed in the following list are Tor user friendly, accept anonymous registration and can be payed anonymously by BTC or prepaid cards. Hi! I am not sure, if I should mirror postings I make Whonix Feature Blog [1] also here. So who is reading this mailing list, but is not reading the feature blog? In Whonix 0.5.1 it will be much easier to follow Whonix blogs, because when starting "Tor Browser Recommend", the normal check.torproject.org page will pop up followed by Whonix Important Blog and Whonix Feature Blog in separate tabs. (It shows an offline version, so there aren't any privacy problems.) I made blog post: Call for Testing - Whonix 0.5.1 [2] Cheers! adrelanos [1] https://sourceforge.net/p/whonix/featureblog/ [2] https://sourceforge.net/p/whonix/featureblog/2013/02/call-for-testing---whonix-051/ |

Hi Mike, on which Whonix aspects do you plan to work on? Does creating Whonix from source code, the .ova creation process work for you? Do you like to work on configuration files? One, reasonable easy ticket for research to start with, from the old, suboptimal bug tracker would be: [SECURITY] Better Blog [1] - Next Whonix version should include a way to keep users informed about latest Whonix news. Therefore at least an SSL version for unregistered users is required. - Whonix Important Blog and Feature Blog can only be viewed over SSL for people logged into sourceforge.net. Related Whonix Stay Tuned documentation. [2] - Find or host a free blog with rss or atom support, SSL support or as a hidden service. - The blog service must tolerate the topic "Whonix" and be reliable. - sf.net blog supports fetching RSS/Atom feed URL from external feeds, so sf.net community team remains happy and continues with occasionally promotion stuff (they tweeted Whonix etc.). Cheers, adrelanos [1] https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/doc/TorBOX/Dev#SECURITYBetterBlog [2] https://sourceforge.net/p/whonix/wiki/Download/#stay-tuned |

I am afraid that won't work either. Anonymously registering a Google account won't work either. "Google wants me to supply a mobile phone number for registration, which is impossible, while staying completely anonymous." Thanks for suggesting anyway. By the way this was the first external message to whonix-devel. Cheers, adrelanos |

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA512 Hi everyone, Whonix ALPHA 0.4.5 is now out. Whonix (called TorBOX or aos in past) is an anonymous general purpose operating system based on Virtual Box, Debian GNU/Linux and Tor. By Whonix design, IP and DNS leaks are impossible. Not even malware with root rights can find out the user's real IP/location. This is because Whonix consists of two (virtual) machines. One machine solely runs Tor and acts as a gateway, which we call Whonix-Gateway. The other machine, which we call Whonix-Workstation, is on a completely isolated network. Only connections through Tor are possible. This is only a very brief introduction. See Security [1] for a more comprehensive description, security features and threat model. Whonix is produced independently from the Tor (r) anonymity software and carries no guarantee from The Tor Project about quality, suitability or anything else. Screenshots: https://sourceforge.net/p/whonix/wiki/Screenshots/ Highlights: Applications: Can torify almost any application safely. [13] [14] Bridges: (Private) (obfuscated) bridges can be used the same way they could be used with vanilla Tor. [12] VPN/Tunnel Support: combining Whonix with VPNs, proxies or ssh in any combination is possible. [11] Hidden Service Support: You can provide any kind of hidden service with a greatly reduced risk for IP leaks. [10] Windows Support: Whonix-Gateway can also torify Microsoft Windows or any other operating system. [9] Flash Support: Although recommend against Flash, people point Mozilla Firefox, Flash and socksifier at their feet and pull the trigger. Whonix is currently the safest method to use Adobe Flash. [15] Homepage with documentation: https://sourceforge.net/p/whonix/wiki/Home/ Or a shorter homepage url: http://whonix.sf.net Call for help: Please test and leave feedback. Since I am currently the only person developing Whonix, I could need some help. General content anonymity caution note: Whonix uses the best of both worlds, the Isolating Proxy concept [2] and the Transparent Proxy concept. At the moment there are no known anonymity leaks or proxy bypass problems. The principal design is less vulnerable for any kind of leaks. At time of writing (October 2012) I have been working on the theoretical concept and practical implementation for 9 months, the basics have been developed by (at least) three people, adrelanos, smarm and anonymous. [1] [2] Although Whonix has been developed with greatest care, a negative, being leak free or being free form mistakes in the extended project description [1], can not be proven. This is Whonix's first release announcement. I hope skilled people look into the concept and implementation and fail to find anonymity related bugs. Download link: Virtual Machine images for Virtual Box (.ova) can be downloaded from sourceforge. https://sourceforge.net/p/whonix/wiki/Download/ Changelog: https://sourceforge.net/p/whonix/wiki/Changelog/ The GnuPG signature that signed this email is also the same key that signs the Whonix sha512 hash files. You can find my gpg key here. [5] [6] [7] [8] Thanks: Thanks to the many people who either directly or indirectly contributed to this project. Thanks to the Free Software community, the people who write papers and documentation, the Tor developers, the Tails developers, the Virtual Box developers, upstream developers, Debian/Ubuntu GNU/Linux developers, Whonix contributors, testers, people active on mailing lists and so on. Without them, Whonix wouldn't be possible!
